School lunches: Thumbs up for Baton Rouge chef's menu

Feeding kids in Baton Rouge can be cheap and educational, preaches chef Lauren Guy. Fusing Louisiana flavor with nutritional verve, Career Academy's lunch menu is a welcome example of newly reformed meals getting positive student marks.

Chef's jackets are not the first thing you would expect to see in a school cafeteria. Especially not in a charter school with a 94 percent free or reduced lunch rate.

But chef Lauren Guy is not your average lunch lady. And this is not your average cafeteria. It's in the Career Academy, a Louisiana Resource Center for Educators-run charter high school in north Baton Rouge.

"Our mission this year is to get vegetables in their purest form and fruits in their purest form, to show them you can do this on a budget," Guy said. "Because clearly we are."

That means taking pains to serve fresh produce at every meal, like fruit cups and orange wedges for breakfast and scoops of grapes with lunch. She's also kept the Louisiana flavor, but made it healthier.

"We started out the year with red beans, because we want to give them good Louisiana food and show them it could be made the healthy way," she said.

She also chooses a lot of foods the students may not get a chance to try at home, like Chinese barbecued pork.

"I want them to learn to eat real, adult food," Guy said.

The up to 200 students she serves a day seem to appreciate the efforts.

Katoria Augustus, 17, loved the seedless green grapes she was served recently with a turkey burger and baked fries.

"Keep your hands off my grapes," she said, as a tablemate reached for her tray. "I love the grapes, and the fries."

Kevin Augillard, 17, was a little more critical of the fries, complaining they were softer than those fried in hot oil. But he liked the burger meat and fixings.

"The meat's good and the bread's good, but it needs some more, like, seasoning," he said.

Augillard was tasting the chef's effort to cut down on a lot of the salt school lunch menus traditionally contain.

Nancy Roberts, executive director of the LRCE, said the lack of salt was one of the first complaints they heard, but that she hopes the meals, combined with education on what to eat and when, will overcome the complaints.

"She educates the?kids?on why we're doing this, which is really important," Roberts said. The school also has an allied health program, headed by a nurse, that backs up Guy's efforts in the kitchen.

And that kitchen's come a long way, too.

"It's been an uphill battle getting the kitchen ready to go," Guy said. When Guy first took over, the kitchen lacked a stove, which has since been remedied with a generous donation by Gene Todaro, owner of Marcello's Wine Cellar.

Unlike other schools, Career Academy serves its lunches on hard plastic trays, not disposable Styrofoam plates, and uses real cutlery.

"I think it shows we value (the food) more," Guy said as she hustled to help her staff of four get ready for a second shift of hungry students.

Guy, who holds a degree from the John Folse Culinary Institute at Nicholls State University, previously worked in restaurants before tackling school lunches.

In order to cook at Career Academy, Guy had to attend classes and become a School Food Authority, a federal certification that allows a school to cook on site.

"She's extremely bright and capable," Roberts said. "Very much a self-starter."

Guy's enthusiasm's spread to the students, who eagerly give her feedback at every meal. A few weeks ago, some students suggested green grapes instead of red. They were pleased by Guy's change to a recent Friday menu, which included a big scoop of green grapes.

After service for each shift is over, Guy walks the cafeteria, talking to each table about that day's menu.

"What a jewel," Roberts said. "We have a lot of positive mojo."

Study: Fraud growing in scientific research papers

EMBARGOED UNTIL 3 PM, EDT, MONDAY, OCT. 1 - FILE - In this May 26, 2010 file photo, Dr. Andrew Wakefield speaks in Chicago. Fraud in scientific research, while still rare, is growing at an alarming rate, a new study finds. A review of retractions in medical and biological peer-reviewed journals finds the percentage of studies that had to be retracted because of scientific misconduct has jumped several-fold since the mid-1970s. From 1975 to 1980, scientists found a rate of about 15 fraud retractions for every 1 million studies published. That rate peaked in 2007 with 96 retractions for fraud for every 1 million studies. (AP) ? Fraud in scientific research, while still rare, is growing at a troubling pace, a new study finds.

A review of retractions in medical and biological peer-reviewed journals finds the percentage of studies withdrawn because of fraud or suspected fraud has jumped substantially since the mid-1970s. In 1976, there were fewer than 10 fraud retractions for every 1 million studies published, compared with 96 retractions per million in 2007.

The study authors aren't quite sure why this is happening. But they and outside experts point to pressure to hit it big in science, both for funding and attention, and to what seems to be a subtle increase in deception in overall society that science may simply be mirroring.

Fraud in life sciences research is still minuscule and committed by only a few dozen scientific scofflaws. However, it causes big problems, said Arturo Casadevall, a professor of microbiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Casadevall is the lead author of the study which looked at the reasons for 2,047 retractions among many millions of studies published in journals and kept in a government database for medically focused research.

Fraud was the No. 1 cause of retractions, accounting for 43 percent of them. When fraud was combined with other areas of misconduct, such as plagiarism, it explained about 2 out of 3 retractions, the study found.

"Very few people are doing it, but when they do it, they are doing it in areas that are very important," Casadevall said. "And when these things come out, society loses faith in science."

Prominent retractions that Casadevall cited for fraud include a notorious British study that wrongly linked childhood vaccines to autism, nine separate studies on highly touted research at Duke University about cancer treatment, and work by a South Korean cloning expert who later was convicted in court of embezzlement and illegally buying human eggs for research.

Casadevall said he was surprised because he didn't set out to study fraud. His plan was to examine the most common avoidable errors that caused retractions. What he found was that 889 of the more than 2,000 retractions were due to fraud or suspected fraud.

While other studies have shown a rise in retractions, no previous study has found scientific misconduct as the leading cause, said Nicholas Steneck, director of the research ethics program at the University of Michigan, who wasn't involved in the Casadevall study. That shows a need for better, more honest reporting of retractions by the science journals themselves, he said.

He and others also said the findings suggest there may just be better detection of scientific fraud overall.

Most "scientists out there are well meaning and honest people who are going to be totally appalled by this," Casadevall said.

The study was published online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which had the second most retracted articles for all reasons, behind only the journal Science.

The publication with the most fraud-based retractions was the Journal of Biological Chemistry. PNAS ranked fifth.

Casadevall said that even if society as a whole has become more deceptive, "I used to think that science was on a different plane. But I think science is like everybody else and that we are susceptible to the same pressures."

In science, he said, "there's a disproportionate reward system" so if a researcher is published in certain prominent journals they are more likely to get jobs and funding, so the temptations increase.

"Bigger money makes for bigger reasons for fraud," said New York University bioethicist Arthur Caplan. "More fame, more potential for profit... Some of the cheating and fraud is not too dissimilar to the cheating and fraud we've seen in banking."

Science historian Marcel LaFollette, author of a book about science fraud "Stealing into Print," said researchers can't prove that more people are lying in general in society, but they get the distinct feeling it's happening more. And in 2006 an Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that while most people say they don't approve of lying, 65 percent of those questioned said it is OK to lie in certain situations.

The world has become accustomed to lying and forgives politicians when they do it in relationships, LaFollette said. But it's different when it's a doctor, scientist or an engineer because people can get hurt, she said.

Casadevall and Caplan pointed to the 1998 study in Lancet by Andrew Wakefield temporarily linking childhood vaccines to autism ? a study later retracted because it was found to be what another scientific journal called "an elaborate fraud."

"Think about the damage society took when mothers started to question vaccines," Casadevall said. "That's damage and it's still going on."

Reached at home in Texas, Wakefield, who was banned from practicing medicine in his native Great Britain and whose claims are contrary to what prevailing established medical research shows about vaccine and autism, said: "There was no fraud and to use this and to use me as a poster child of fraud really compounds that error."

Casadevall said his work is about science trying to clean its own house. And because it's about fraud, he said he did one extra thing with his study: He sent reviewers not just a summary of their work, but all the data, "so they can check on us."

Teddy Bear Parade winds through the streets of historic downtown

GRESHAM, Ore. - The streets of historic downtown Gresham came alive on Saturday as kids of all ages, and plenty of adults, showed up with teddy bears for the city's big annual 'Teddy Bear Parade.'

This was the 30th year for the parade, which is one of the city's biggest events.

Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis, along with City Council members, took the lead as participants fell in behind and followed them through town.

The parade helps Soroptomist raise funds for its organization but ask any member and they'll tell you it's mostly about the kids and giving them an opportunity to be involved in a fun, local event.

Fielder's 30th HR help Tigers stay up by 2

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:21 p.m. ET Sept. 30, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Detroit Tigers finally have a little bit of breathing room in what has been an air-tight AL Central title race.

Miguel Cabrera has no such luxury as he tries to become the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years.

Prince Fielder hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Detroit to a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, moving the Tigers to a season-high three game lead over the White Sox in the AL Central.

The White Sox lost to Tampa Bay 6-2. So with three games to go, Detroit can clinch the division title with a win in Kansas City on Monday or a Chicago loss to Cleveland.

"We're not all the way happy yet," Fielder said. "We have what, three games left? Try to win those and after that, we'll see what happens."

Fielder's opposite-field shot off Jared Burton (3-2) just barely cleared the wall in left field for his 30th homer of the season.

Cabrera, who is trying to become the first player since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967 to win the Triple Crown, went 0 for 3 with an intentional walk, dropping his AL-leading batting average to .325.

Twins star Joe Mauer went 3 for 4 with an intentional walk to raise his average to .323, putting him right on Cabrera's heels going into the final series of the season.

Anibal Sanchez gave up one run on seven hits in 6 1-3 innings, Phil Coke (2-3) got the win in relief and Jose Valverde picked up his 34th save.

Cabrera and the powerful Tigers offense were held down for most of the game by Liam Hendriks, who gave up five hits and struck out three in seven shutout innings.

When Pedro Florimon gave the Twins a 1-0 lead on a single in the seventh, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire went to the rock steady right-hander Burton for the eighth. But Austin Jackson led off with a single up the middle and Fielder hit the first pitch he saw out of the park.

The big first baseman, who doesn't often show emotion on the diamond, nearly bowled over manager Jim Leyland when he reached the dugout. He was mobbed by his teammates, a celebration eclipsed in the clubhouse a little while later when the Tigers watched the Rays finish off the White Sox.

"When it's there, I let it out," Fielder said.

Cabrera entered the day leading the AL in batting average and RBIs - both by comfortable margins - and tied with Texas star Josh Hamilton for the lead in home runs.

But the batting race suddenly is up in the air.

Mauer hit three singles off Sanchez, while Cabrera had some hard luck with a ball hit squarely that Florimon was able to snatch out of the air at shortstop.

"He's a great hitter and Joe's a great hitter," Gardenhire said. "We've got three left and they've got three left. We'll see what it comes down to."

But Cabrera did find a way to have an impact on defense, jumping at first base to snag a line drive from Chris Parmelee in the sixth inning that stranded two runners in scoring position. The Twins had runners on first and third with nobody out in the inning, but Sanchez was able to get Justin Morneau to pop out and Ryan Doumit to tap one right back to him before Cabrera helped him wiggle out of the jam.

"This is his team," Fielder said of Cabrera. "I'm here to help him. This is his team, I just want to come and help and be a part of it. Be a part of being able to watch somebody that great. I just love being a fan, just watching him."

NOTES: Tigers RHP Max Scherzer (shoulder) said he felt good after playing catch on Saturday and could be available to start the regular season finale against the Royals on Wednesday. Leyland said the team would be cautious with Scherzer, who missed his last start because of soreness in his deltoid. ... Gardenhire said he hopes to retain his entire coaching staff going into next season but knows that the front office could try to shake things up after back-to-back 90-loss seasons. "I have all the faith that they can do the job, but some of these things aren't going to be left up to me," he said. ... The Tigers will start RHP Rick Porcello (9-12, 4.68) in the opener against Kansas City on Monday against LHP Bruce Chen (11-13, 5.13).

Anyone can get involved in home improvement projects. Home improvement projects can benefit you much further than providing you with a nicer home to live in. When these projects are done well, they can boost your property value. This article should give you some tips on how to handle your next remodeling project.

People may consider installing radiant heating or a central vacuuming system in order to attract higher purchase offers from potential buyers. Unfortunately, many forget to focus on the exterior aesthetics such as the paint or the crooked shutters. Buyers notice these things and consider the property a fixer-upper. Do not forget that the first impression that others have of your home does matter.

Some people believe that high ticket items like radiant heating under the floors or central vacuum systems will add value to their homes. However, they avoid painting the outside of the house or fixing the crooked shutters! Buyers notice these things and consider the property a fixer-upper. The way someone initially sees your home is important.

Soundproofing inside interior walls makes a good investment in any home. It would be luxurious to soundproof every wall, but it's not really feasible or financially savvy. Bedrooms, bathrooms and equipment rooms are the most important to sound proof. The kitchen can be a nice area to soundproof as well, unless it's a fairly open kitchen that attaches to a lot of different areas.

Use empty two-liter bottles as storage containers for your kitchen. They will protect just about any dried goods like flour or sugar. They are also clear, so it is easy to see what is inside. You can put them in the freezer or even in the fridge. Just open and pour when you need to use the contents.

If you wish to get creative with the design of the place, set up a stencil along the walls and use this for an outline of your basic graphic. Laminate some copies of your pattern at the copy store, and then cut them out with a craft knife. Place your stencil on the wall using painter's tape, apply the paint and put another stencil underneath the older one, switching as needed to complete the look throughout the room.

Install battery-powered LED fixtures in closets. You can find them at many discount stores. Some require you setting them in place with a couple of screws. Some are even easier with sticky pads. If you buy automatic lights, you can just open the door and the light will turn on.

Making your ceiling appear higher than it is can be accomplished using two very simple tips. You can put a lengthy floor lamp in the room or install striped wall paper. Doing this creates the illusion of height. The eye focuses on the tall lines, causing the ceilings to seem higher.

Pay attention to the climate in which you live. If your climate isn't accommodating, a patio may not be a great addition. Creating a covered patio or a wind-breaking structure may improve the situation, but if you aren't prepared to shell out for these extra costs, you may be better off skipping these plans.

Sand wooden objects before staining to make sure the wood is smooth. Follow up by wiping with a damp cloth. Sanding smooths the finish. Using a damp cloth to wipe the surface helps get rid of dust and provide a smooth finish.

If a home improvement project will require using your street, be courteous and tell your neighbors well ahead of time. This may occur if you need to have things delivered or if large pieces of equipment are a part of your plans. Your neighbors will appreciate a little warning before you inconvenience them this way.

Once you have put in new floors or carpets, do not allow anyone to walk on it with shoes in order to ensure that it looks good for years. Provide your guests with a storage space to take off their shoes. Consider providing slippers to everyone. This ensures that your floor stays clean for many years.

When you have to have your roof redone, use light colored substances or white tile. Having a light colored roof will help keep your attic cool by deflecting the sun's rays. This will make your cooling and heating bills less expensive.

Get references from anyone you hire to do improvements at your home. Think of it in terms of hiring an employee for your business. You want to investigate background, and also ensure that others have been happy with the work they do.

If you are improving your home on a budget, and want to stay in your home during the work, focus on only one room at once. This will keep things bearable, as long as you have more than one bathroom. When the bathroom is being renovated, living in your home is just not possible. Therefore, attempt to stay with your family or friends until you finish it.

Taking on a remodeling job doesn't have to be intimidating and difficult. Things will be easier by properly planning and taking your time. Take these ideas to heart and begin working on your house.

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican has never seen anything like it.

Pope Benedict XVI's trusted butler, who dressed the pontiff each morning, attended his daily Mass and helped serve him his meals, stands accused of stealing the pope's private correspondence and giving it to a journalist who wrote a blockbuster book about the secrets of one of the most secretive institutions in the world.

Paolo Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, goes on trial Saturday in the most sensational crime committed on Vatican territory since the 1998 double murder of the Swiss Guard commander and his wife. That case never came to trial because the suspect killed himself.

Gabriele, who was replaced after the scandal broke in May, is scheduled to face the three-judge Vatican tribunal, charged with aggravated theft and facing up to four years in prison if convicted. He has already confessed and asked to be pardoned by the pope ? something most Vatican watchers say is a given if he is convicted.

WHAT PAPERS WERE STOLEN?

According to prosecutors, Gabriele had an "enormous" stash of papal documents at his Vatican City apartment. After his May 24 arrest, he admitted he photocopied documents and gave them to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose "His Holiness: The secret papers of Pope Benedict XVI" was published in May. The most damaging letter reproduced in the book was written by the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope, in which he begged not to be transferred as punishment for exposing alleged corruption. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

WHY WAS IT LEAKED?

Nuzzi has said his source, code-named "Maria" in the book, wanted to shed light on the secrets of the church that were damaging it. Taken as a whole, the documents seemed aimed at discrediting Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state and Benedict's longtime trusted deputy. Bertone, 77, a canon lawyer and soccer enthusiast, has frequently been criticized for perceived shortcomings in running the Vatican.

DID THE BUTLER DO IT?

Prosecutors quoted Gabriele as saying he knew taking the documents was wrong, but that he felt the Holy Spirit was inspiring him to shed light on the problems he saw around him. "Seeing evil and corruption everywhere in the church ... I was sure that a shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the Church back on the right track," Gabriele was quoted by prosecutors as saying during a June 5 interrogation. They quoted him as saying he never intended to hurt the church or Benedict.

IF HE CONFESSED, WHY BOTHER WITH A TRIAL?

In the U.S. legal system, a case such as this might result in a plea bargain. But the Vatican legal system doesn't provide for plea bargains, according to Giovanni Giacobbe, the prosecutor in the Vatican appeals court. He noted that confessions can be coerced or given up to protect someone else. Gabriele's confession must be corroborated by other evidence uncovered during the investigation in order for him to be convicted, he said. A co-defendant, Vatican computer expert Claudio Sciarpelletti, is charged with aiding and abetting Gabriele.

HOW DOES A VATICAN TRIAL WORK?

The hearing opens Saturday at 9:30 a.m. No oaths are taken ? as the Vatican legal system, like the Italian one on which it is based, assumes a suspect may lie for self-protection. The hearing is declared open and one of the judges reads the charges aloud against Gabriele. He doesn't enter a plea. The defense can make objections to the indictment. Both sides may enter their witness lists. Eventually, the presiding judge ? Giuseppe Dalla Torre, president of the Vatican City State tribunal ? questions Gabriele. Unlike the U.S. system, prosecutors don't question suspects directly and there is no cross-examination; the judge conducts the interrogations on behalf of both sides. Eventually, after all witnesses are heard, objections dealt with and evidence examined, the judges convene in their chambers and issue a ruling.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

There has never been a trial like this before in the Vatican tribunal, so there's no way to know how long it will take. Much depends on what, if any, objections are raised and how many witnesses are called. Hearings are usually only held on Saturdays, since the judges on the Vatican tribunal hold full-time jobs elsewhere.

WHAT'S THE TRIBUNAL LIKE?

The trial takes place in the small, austere courtroom inside a four-story, peach-colored palazzo inside Vatican City. A plaque near the entrance reads "Judicial Offices" and a carved stone papal seal frames the doorway. A metal detector greets visitors. The courtroom features rich wood paneling and gilded molding on the ceiling, and a small crucifix is centered behind the chairs of the three lay judges. Gabriele, assuming he attends, can sit at one of the tables facing the judges with his lawyer. The prosecutor has his own place at the other table. There is a small section for the public.

WHO CAN ATTEND A VATICAN TRIAL?

On paper, Vatican court proceedings are open to the public. But Giacobbe said those wishing to attend must petition the court, which then decides whether to grant permission. Gabriele, who was granted house arrest in July after spending nearly two months in a Vatican police unit, doesn't have to attend. For the media, eight journalists attend each session and report back to the Vatican press corps. No television, still cameras or audio recording is allowed and court transcripts aren't public.

HOW HAS THE POPE AND THE VATICAN REACTED?

The Vatican took the betrayal very seriously: Benedict appointed a commission of three cardinals to investigate alongside Vatican magistrates; they delivered their confidential report to the pope over the summer. Benedict addressed the scandal for the first time a week after Gabriele was arrested, saying "The events of recent days about the Curia and my collaborators have brought sadness in my heart." But in a nod to his confidence in Bertone, he added: "I want to renew my trust in and encouragement of my closest collaborators and all those who every day, with loyalty and a spirit of sacrifice and in silence, help me fulfill my ministry."

A small college cancels ACS journal subscriptions, and ACS doesn't want to talk about it

A few weeks ago, Jenica Rogers, the library director at SUNY Potsdam, a small public college in upstate New York, wrote a blog post detailing how her library and chemistry department decided to cancel subscriptions to the journals published by the American Chemical Society due to unsustainable costs. Faculty at SUNY Potsdam agreed that it was worthwhile to forego immediate access to that content, even though it?s of high quality. Continued access to ACS journals would have used up 10% of the total library acquisitions budget. To make up for the loss of ACS journals they added subscriptions to journals from the Royal Society of Chemistry and other publishers.

The American Chemical Society is well known in library circles for having aggressive year-to-year price increases. Last year, my library cancelled its subscription to the ?all ACS journals? package in favor of a new, smaller, package of 16 ACS journals to avoid an effective 11% price jump on the ?all journals? package. The year before our cost for the ACS archive (pre-1995 journals) doubled as the ACS moved to a new pricing model. While prices for the smaller journal package held steady for us this year, I keep a list of things that we might need to cancel when (not if) prices increase faster than the library budget. I?m concerned that we will have to cancel this smaller journal package in favor of just a few ACS subscriptions sometime in the next few years. After several years of declining or steady library budgets, my library has made all of the ?easy? cuts we can in order to afford scholarly content from the ACS and other publishers: the book budget has been slashed, we?ve cancelled many magazines and newspapers, the student worker budget has been cut, we aren?t binding print journals anymore, etc. Other libraries are in a similar position where the only thing left to cut are journal subscriptions.

Many folks have responded to Potsdam?s move on library and chemistry blogs and other news sites (John Dupuis has a good list of posts and commentary). Some applaud their actions as standing up to the ?Goliath? of publishers. Others lament that their students will lose access to high quality research published by ACS. Few ask about the non-chemistry students who would lose access to their own discipline?s high quality research in order for Potsdam to afford the ACS subscriptions. Every time journal subscription costs go up faster than library budgets, something has to be cut.

For many folks, subscriptions to these journals were once considered un-cancelable. Perhaps we?ve been pushed to the point now where that is no longer the case.

In a recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education the author talked to Jenica, a chemistry faculty member, and reached out to the ACS about the issue, expanding on some of the issues raised in Jenica?s original blog post. The ACS seemed to say that they aren?t going to talk to us about this in the places where we talk about this:

?We find little constructive dialogue can be had on blogs and other listservs where logic, balance, and common courtesy are not practiced and observed,? Glenn S. Ruskin, the group?s director of public affairs, said in an e-mail message. ?As a matter of practice, ACS finds that direct engagement via telephone or face-to-face with individuals expressing concern over pricing or other related matters is the most productive means to finding common ground and resolution.?

This statement infuriated many mild mannered librarians. Librarians use blogs, listservs, and other new-fangled online communication tools to discuss library issues, to help each other out and to engage with publishers on issues of mutual interest.

After several chemistry librarians politely expressed their outrage and disappointment in the ACS on the chemical information societies listerv, Mr. Ruskin emailed a response, stating that a final sentence had been left off his quote:

?Therefore, we will not be offering any response to this blog posting or the conversation that has ensued.?

His explanation suggested that the ACS was not going to respond to Jenica?s blog post and this particular issue. I?m not sure that Mr. Ruskin?s clarification seems to help the matter. Whatever your feelings about the tone of Jenica?s blog post (or her previous posts about the ACS in which she has described herself as ?feeling pointy?), Mr. Ruskin is still saying that they aren?t going to talk about this issue in the places where librarians talk about issues like this.

Personally, I don?t blame Jenica for using blunt language and the occasional curse word when talking about ACS with friends and colleagues. I became a librarian because I love information, and I?m passionate about teaching students to access, understand and use the scientific literature. When publishers make it more difficult for students to access it by charging fees that we can no longer afford, I feel ?pointy? too. Just ask the librarians whose cubicles are next to mine.

Those of us struggling to provide our students and faculty with high quality research are frustrated that we don?t have partners on the other side of the table willing to engage with us in honest conversation about journal prices. We are left with few options: renew at the prices ACS is charging or cancel something. It isn?t a nice position to be in.

Talk to us, ACS. And I don?t mean by calling me privately. Engage with librarians and chemists about this issue on listservs and blogs. Open a dialog on what a reasonable pricing model would include. We know that you have good content, and we?re not expecting to access it for free. But when we can?t afford it anymore we are left with few options, and almost everyone loses. I would love to see a greater variety of journal package options (a package of 8 or 12 journals, for example) at a lower cost. I would like to see some honest figures about why my college?s cost per download is about 10 times the cost per download of our nearby university. I would also love to hear about how the aggressive price increases and higher-than-other-scholarly-societies subscription costs mesh with the mission statement of the ACS ?to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people.?

Don?t shut down the public conversation.

(AP) ? A gunman killed four people inside a Minneapolis sign-making business before turning the weapon on himself, authorities said early Friday.

Officers summoned Thursday afternoon by a 911 call discovered the victims' bodies shortly after arriving at Accent Signage Systems Inc., located in a residential area in the city's north side, according to a statement from police spokesman Sgt. Stephen McCarty.

"When officers arrived and entered the business to assist with the evacuation of employees, give aid to the victims and to search for the suspect, they found four victims dead from apparent gunshot wounds," the statement said.

Four other people were wounded, including three critically.

No details were released about the gunman, other than he was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

During a news conference Thursday night, Minneapolis Police Deputy Chief Kris Arneson wouldn't specify how many people had been killed, saying only that "several" victims were found dead inside. She said police never fired at the gunman, but she didn't release other details ? including the gunman's possible motive or whether he had worked at the company.

Hennepin County Medical Center was treating the four patients, including three men in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. The fourth victim suffered minor injuries, police said.

None of the victims' names has been released.

Someone from inside the building called 911 around 4:30 p.m. to report the shootings, police said. The first officers on the scene quickly began evacuating people from the business and closed off several blocks.

Dozens of squad cars and SWAT officers swarmed the neighborhood Thursday afternoon, and traffic was stopped on a nearby bridge along Penn Avenue, where officers had rifles drawn and pointed at the business and a park below.

By Thursday evening, police vehicles were still surrounding the business. People from the neighborhood milled around but deputies kept them back.

Marques Jones, 18, of Minneapolis, said he was outside a building down the street having his high school senior pictures taken when he and his photographer heard gunfire that sounded close.

"We heard about four to five gunshots," Jones said. "We were shocked at what happened and we just looked at each other. We all just took off running to our vehicles."

According to Accent Signage Systems' website, the company makes interior signage and lists its founder as Reuven Rahamim. A phone messages left at the business was not immediately returned, and a woman who answered the phone at Rahamim's residential listing declined comment.

The company employed 28 people as of July, according to a feature on the business in Finance & Commerce, a local business publication. The paper reported that U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce Francisco Sanchez visited it in August in a trip focused on exporting and praised the company for its innovation.

The company developed a patented technology for producing signs in Braille and had licensed the technology to companies in 38 countries, the newspaper said.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said employees who were working when the shootings occurred were together and being cared for Thursday evening.

"We are deeply sorry about what has happened here," he said, calling the shootings "a horrible tragedy."

Linebacker Daryl Smith is out for the Jags and they should get running back Rashad Jennings is likely to make his return to the lineup after being listed as probable.

Dolphins at Cardinals

Running back Reggie Bush and cornerback Richard Marshall are listed as questionable, but the expectation is that each of them will play this week. The news isn?t quite so good for Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett. He?s doubtful because of a hamstring injury and tight end Todd Heap and running back LaRod Stephens-Howling both earned the same designation.

Vikings at Lions

Both quarterbacks are probable after dealing with injuries this week. Linebacker Erin Henderson is out again for the Vikings thanks to a concussion, but defensive end Jared Allen is probable. Lions defensive tackle Corey Williams will miss the game after having knee surgery this week, running back Mikel Leshoure is questionable and safety Louis Delmas is doubtful as he makes an extended recovery from his own knee surgery.

Patriots at Bills

The Patriots will be without wide receiver Julian Edelman and tight end Aaron Hernandez. Tight end Rob Gronkowski, guard Logan Mankins and tackle Sebastian Vollmer are all questionable. The Bills hope to have running backs Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller, although both are listed as questionable following limited practice participation this week.

Saints at Packers

Defensive end Turk McBride, linebacker David Hawthorne and linebacker Jonathan Casillas are all out for the Saints. Wide receiver Greg Jennings is probable for the Packers, as is running back James Starks.

Raiders at Broncos

Oakland has ruled out tackle Khalif Barnes and cornerback Shawntae Spencer for a second straight game. Running back Darren McFadden is probable after being slowed by a shoulder injury this week and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, while eager to get back on the field, is doubtful thanks to the blow to the head and neck he took in last week?s win against the Steelers. The Broncos are fairly healthy with the exception of safety Quinton Carter, who is out, and guard Chris Kuper, listed as doubtful.

Chargers at Chiefs

Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright is out again this week while tackle Jared Gaither has climbed the ladder to questionable while dealing with his ever-present back injury. Kicker Nate Kaeding is also listed as questionable, but he?s not going to Kansas City and Nick Novak will kick. The Chiefs offense could be in a tough way. Tight end Kevin Boss is out, running back Peyton Hillis is doubtful and three wideouts ? Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston and Dexter McCluster ? are all questionable.

49ers at Jets

The 49ers continue to list running back Brandon Jacobs and wide receiver Ted Ginn as questionable, just as they have before they?ve missed the team?s other games this season. Cornerback Darrelle Revis is out (and will be until his triumphant return for the Super Bowl) and wide receiver Stephen Hill is listed as doubtful, although you can go ahead and downgrade him based on Rex Ryan?s assessment of his chances of playing. Tight end Dustin Keller and linebacker Bryan Thomas, who have each missed the last two games, are questionable.

Seahawks at Rams

Seattle listed guard John Moffitt as doubtful and linebacker LeRoy Hill is questionable. The Rams will have another game-time decision with running back Steven Jackson and rookie defensive tackle Michael Brockers could make his regular season debut after missing the first three games with an ankle injury.

Titans at Texans

Tennessee wide receiver Kenny Britt and tight end Jared Cook are both questionable, although Cook was the only one to practice at all this week. The Texans listed wide receiver Lestar Jean as out and they have a slew of players, including quarterback Matt Schaub and running back Arian Foster, as probable.

Redskins at Buccaneers

Cornerback Cedric Griffin is out for the Redskins while wide receiver Pierre Gar?on and tackle Trent Williams have both been listed as questionable. The Buccaneers will be without cornerback Anthony Gaitor, but are otherwise injury free.

Giants at Eagles

The Giants won?t have tackle David Diehl again this week and cornerback Jayron Hosley and linebacker Keith Rivers have also been ruled out. Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks is doubtful and likely to miss a second straight game. Demetress Bell will start at left tackle for the Eagles in place of King Dunlap, but wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and defensive end Trent Cole are both probable for the game.
