Ravens outlast Browns

Flacco throws for 356 yards as Baltimore (3-1) beats AFC North rival, 23-16

Baltimore receiver Torrey Smith?celebrates with teammate Dennis Pitta after scoring a touchdown. The Ravens improved to 3-1 with Thursday's win.

By DAVID GINSBURG

updated 1:19 a.m. ET Sept. 28, 2012

BALTIMORE - The regular NFL officials returned to action, and the ending of their first game was eerily familiar to the one that hastened the exit of the replacement refs.

This time, however, there were no replays or arguments at the end. Just another win by the Baltimore Ravens over the Cleveland Browns, 23-16 on Thursday night.

If not for two failed desperation passes into the end zone in the closing seconds, the returning officials might have had to work overtime on their first night back.

Cleveland began its final drive with 1:05 to go on its own 10. Rookie Brandon Weeden moved the Browns to the Baltimore 33 before a fourth-down pass into the end zone fell incomplete. But a personal foul penalty on Baltimore linebacker Paul Kruger gave winless Cleveland one more chance.

That pass sailed out of the end zone.

"Too much juice," Weeden lamented.

The final sequence was not unlike the controversial ending of Monday night's Green Bay-Seattle game, when a Hail Mary pass was ruled a touchdown. That play, and the furor it created, hastened negotiations that brought the regular officials back.

The lockout ended late Wednesday, bringing about the exit of the unpopular replacement refs. And so, finally, the tenured officials were in place for Week 4.

"I felt so bad for that Green Bay situation," Ravens running back Ray Rice said. "Replacement refs, their families, I can't knock them. The scrutiny they were under. That kind of scrutiny is bad. It's hard going from like Pop Warner to the big leagues."

As they walked onto the field hours before this game, the officiating crew received a round of applause and shouts of encouragement from fans in the lower sections. Head linesman Wayne Mackie and line judge Jeff Seeman both tipped their caps to acknowledge the support.

And then, before the pregame coin flip, referee Gene Steratore greeted the players at midfield by saying, "Good evening, men, it's good to be back."

Many in the sellout crowd of 70,944 stood and roared their approval.

Afterward, Ravens coach John Harbaugh echoed the sentiment of the crowd.

"Welcome back to the officials. Good to have them back," he said. "These guys are really good. The communication was good. I didn't agree with every call, but they were excellent."

Joe Flacco went 28 for 46 for 356 yards, threw one touchdown and ran for another. Yet, it wasn't until Cary Williams returned an interception 63 yards for a score at the end of the third quarter that the Ravens (3-1) put some distance between themselves and the young Browns (0-4).

"I thought our secondary made plays that had to be made, especially at the end there when they were knocking at the door," Harbaugh said. "Cary Wiliams was the difference in the game with the interception return for a touchdown."

The fans waited until the third quarter to boo the officials. On a 13-yard completion from Weeden to Benjamin Watson, Ravens safety Bernard Pollard was called for a helmet-to-helmet hit. The crowd jeered the call, but replays appeared to confirm the penalty.

The 15-yard markoff set up a 51-yard field goal by Phil Dawson that got the Browns within 16-10.

Late in the quarter, Williams ambushed an out pattern by Travis Benjamin and took the interception down the right sideline for a 13-point lead.

It was the 13th consecutive home win for the Ravens, the longest current run in the NFL, and their streak of 10 straight wins in the division is also the most of any team. Baltimore has also won nine straight over Cleveland.

Anquan Boldin caught nine passes for 131 yards, and Torrey Smith had six catches for 97 yards and a score.

Weeden went 25 for 52 for 320 yards, but rookie running back Trent Richardson gained only 47 yards rushing on 14 carries. Dawson kicked field goals of 51, 50 and 52 yards, the last one with 4:33 left to make it 23-16.

It's the third time since 1998 that the Browns have lost their first four games. They finished 2-14 in 1999 and 5-11 in 2009.

Coach Pat Shurmur applauded the performance of the refs, and acknowledged he deserved an unsportsmanlike conduct call in the fourth quarter.

"I can't do that," he said. "It's an emotional game, and I got to make sure I keep my emotions in check."

Cleveland played the majority of the game without wide receiver and punt returner Joshua Cribbs, who sustained a concussion while returning a kick late in the first quarter.

Cribbs had his helmet knocked off and lost the handle on the ball after absorbing a hard hit by Dannell Ellerbe. It was legal tackle, shoulder to helmet, and the officials did not call a penalty. Cribbs lay prone for several minutes before finally rising to his feet and walking off the field.

Flacco went 16 for 26 for 186 yards and a touchdown to stake the Ravens to 9-7 halftime lead.

NOTES: Former Browns and Ravens RB Jamal Lewis was inducted in Baltimore's Ring of Honor. ... Cleveland safeties Tashaun Gipson and Usama Young both sustained knee injuries. ... Dawson is the seventh player in NFL history to kick three FGs of at least 50 yards in a game.

'Unthinkable and devastating': Romney slams Obama on defense cuts

(Alex Wong/Getty Images)SPRINGFIELD, Va.?For the third straight day, Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama campaigned in the same state, with Romney arguing before an audience of military veterans that potential cuts to the defense budget are "unthinkable and devastating."

Speaking in the battleground state at an American Legion post outside Washington, D.C., Romney blamed Obama for planned defense cuts agreed to under a 2011 vote to raise the debt ceiling, known as sequestration, calling it a "kind of a gun-to-your-head opportunity" that will kill jobs in Virginia.

"They would make devastating cuts to our military. It's a strange proposal in the first place, even stranger that it's being put in place," Romney said. "The impact will be immediate, and significant right here in Virginia: 136,000 jobs will be lost in Virginia as a result of this move."

The White House has pointed out that Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, and other Republican congressional leaders supported sequestration when it was proposed. Romney has previously said it was a "mistake" for Republicans in Congress to back the deal.

But speaking in Virginia, Romney put the blame squarely on Obama?arguing the president is cutting the military at a time of turmoil around the world.

"It is still a troubled and dangerous world. And the idea of cutting our military commitment by a trillion dollars over this decade is unthinkable and devastating," Romney declared. "And when I become president of the United States, we will stop it. I will not cut our commitment to the military."

Romney spoke at approximately the same time Obama held his own campaign event in Virginia Beach. A recent Fox News poll found Obama leading Romney by 7 points among likely Virginia voters, 50 to 43 percent.

A Picture of Professionalism ? Business Management Daily: Free ...

Some time ago I was delivering two workshops in Toronto. During the first, there were a couple of comments about professionalism, along the lines of, ?I want my people to act like professionals.? Others in the room nodded their heads, and while I considered asking a follow-up, clarifying question, I opted to move on with the workshop.

The question I could have asked would have been something like, ?and what does professionalism look like?? While I didn?t ask it, I think it is a good question and one that I received an emphatic answer to later that evening.

After a full day of training and hosting a teleseminar I decided I should eat something. So I walked out of my hotel and toward a building with two restaurants in it. I chose a place called Jack Astor?s. When I walked in, I felt energy and saw happy servers. A young man engaged me, asked me where I wanted to sit and I told him I?d just sit in the bar.? Lucky for me, Karl De Joger, the guy who greeted me, was also the bartender and my server.

Karl was pleasant, thoughtful and attentive, but he was far more than that. He asked my name, and shook my hand. He offered advice on the plentiful beer selections, especially when I asked about local micro-brews. He answered my questions about the restaurant, its origins as a chain and more. Compared to many others in his role, I was pleased he knew the history of the business and was willing to talk about it in far more than a ?this-is-what-I-remember-from-some-orientation-session? way. At no time did I seem like a chore.

But don?t assume Karl had nothing else to do but serve me!

He conversed with me while managing the orders at the rest of the bar, serving a couple of tables and managing conversations and orders with all of the other wait staff as well. He did all of this while effortlessly pouring drinks, smiling, cleaning and doing all of the other things a bartender must do ? Everything handled well, never a wasted step or motion.

Karl told me he was 29, had two degrees and had chosen to be a bartender. When I complemented him on how good he was, he said thanks. ?I decided that if I am going to be a bartender, I?m going to be the best one I can possibly be.?

He didn?t need to say that for me to believe it.

The next evening I walked in for dinner again.? I knew Karl would be there, because he had told me so the night before when he invited me back. While the first night I sat at the end of the bar close to where the wait staff came out of the kitchen, the second night I chose the far end expressly so I could watch Karl.? Before I made my way to a seat, he rushed outside the bar and shook my hand, and called me by name. ?Welcome back Kevin!? Because of my selected seat we spoke less than the first night, but he was still, spectacular.

People ask me how I feel about traveling as much as I do. One of the things I dislike about it is eating alone. I?m not sure why, but it is not uncommon for me to eat little, grab fast food or order room service. That wasn?t the case that week. I couldn?t wait for Wednesday night.

I sat back at my favorite spot, near all the action. Karl playfully wondered why I hadn?t sat there the second night. Back near his hub of activity, I continued to watch him do every part of his job with skill and ?flair? (the Jack Astor word for it, he told me). I learned more about his philosophy. He said his father traveled a lot and he decided not to create any of the horror stories his dad shared from his traveling dining stories.

After over three hours of observing Karl (over three separate nights), I can?t think of a part of his job description (and the work that goes beyond the formal descriptions we all write) that he didn?t do with excellence.

Karl De Joger is a bartender. And when I think of professionalism, he is a part of the picture I see.

If you are ever near the Toronto Airport, go to the Jack Astor?s bar and restaurant. And if Karl is there, tell him I said hello.

So what is professionalism? Professionalism stems from an understanding of the importance of one?s work and a belief that doing it well makes a positive difference in the world. As leaders we can help others move in that direction.

Could syntethic cannabis compound cure brain cancer? | Cannabis ...

Researchers led by an Indian-origin investigator are testing the suitability of a synthetic cannabinoid drug ? dexanabinol ? for curing brain cancer. Preliminary tests show that it kills cultured cancer cells derived from many tumour types, a US report says.?Additional research in Santosh Kesari?s neuro-oncology lab at the University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center, demonstrated the drug?s anti-cancer effects in patient-derived brain cancer cell lines. Kesari is the principal study-investigator. ?It could be given as a weekly intravenous infusion. More recently, researchers at e-Therapeutics, the study sponsor, showed that dexanabinol (ETS2101) kills cultured cancer cells derived from many tumour types.

?In this Phase I study, we are examining the safety of multiple doses of dexanabinol, extent of penetration into the brain, and suitability for future trials. What we hope to determine is the safe and optimal dose of drug in the brain,? said Kesari, according to a California statement.?Dexanabinol is a cannabinoid derivative that causes no psychotropic (altering perception or behaviour) effects. It was tested previously as a neuro-protective in patients with traumatic brain injury. During these trials the drug was found to cross the blood-brain barrier.

The blood-brain barrier has been defined by The Free Dictionary ?as a physiological mechanism that alters the permeability of brain capillaries so that certain drugs are prevented from entering brain tissue, while other substances are allowed to enter freely.??Dexanabinol?s potential in fighting cancer was identified through a new approach to drug discovery called network pharmacology, a way to analyze the network of proteins underlying a disease process.?Network pharmacology enables scientists to seek drugs from among existing compounds, or design new molecules, that act simultaneously on a number of individual proteins to disrupt the cancer-susceptible network.

Barnes & Noble launches new Nook HD

(AP) ? Barnes & Noble is rolling out two new versions of its Nook tablet with sleek new hardware and a sharper high-definition screen. The bookseller's move heightens the already intense tablet wars heading into the holiday season.

Barnes & Noble said Wednesday that its new Nook HD will come in two sizes, one with a 7-inch screen (measured diagonally), starting at $199, and one with a new 9-inch diagonal screen, called the Nook HD+, starting at $269.

In addition to the new HD screen and a lighter body, Barnes & Noble is also increasing the services the Nook offers, adding a video purchase and rental service, allowing users to maintain different "profiles" and making it easier to browse titles in its book and magazine stores.

New York-based Barnes & Noble, the largest traditional U.S. bookseller, has invested heavily in its Nook e-reader and e-books. In its most recent fiscal quarter, sales of digital content surged 46 percent, but revenue from devices dropped partly due to lower prices. Nook prices in the May-July period were about 23 percent lower than a year ago.

The company is seeking to offset tough competition from online retailers such as Amazon.com, as consumers increasingly move away from traditional books and DVDs to electronic books and streaming video.

The Nook HD is an upgrade to the hardware and services offered by its previous tablets, the Nook Tablet and Nook Color, which Barnes & Noble is phasing out. The company will continue to sell its smaller black-and-white e-reader, called the Nook Simple Touch, for $99, and a backlit Nook Simple Touch for $139. The Nook HD runs on Google's Android 4.0 system and includes Barnes & Noble's own app store and browser.

Tablets are ?once again? expected to be hot items this holiday. The new Nooks come on the heels of Amazon.com's announcement earlier this month that it will offer four new varieties of its Kindle, including a high definition version of its Kindle Fire tablet with an 8.9-inch diagonal screen, which starts at $299. That compares with Apple Inc.'s iPad with a 9.7-inch diagonal screen and $499 starting price.

Apple's iPad is the most popular tablet, and that is not expected to change. Seven out of every 10 tablets sold in the second quarter were iPads, according to IHS iSuppli. Meanwhile Amazon.com has a 4.2 percent share of the tablet market, while Barnes & Noble has a 1.9 percent share, according to iSuppli.

Even so, the category is growing rapidly. An estimated 112.5 million Americans, one-third of U.S. adults, are expected to have tablets by 2016, according to Forrester Research.

And tablet makers are jockeying to gain share on Apple. On specs alone, the new Nook presents a tough choice for consumers seeking a cheap option to the iPad this holiday, analysts say. The 7-inch Nook HD is slightly lighter and narrower, with a sharper display than the similarly priced 7-inch Kindle Fire.

"If the decision the consumer is making is whether to buy based on hardware, these new Nooks will beat out Amazon," said Forrester analyst James McQuivey. "But that's not the decision every consumer is going to make ? hardware is only as good as the services the hardware enables."

So far, Amazon offers more services, McQuivey said, with a bigger app store, and more extensive video library, not to mention Amazon's vast product offerings and its Amazon Prime free-shipping service.

In an attempt to measure up, Barnes & Noble is launching a video service this fall that lets users buy and watch movies and TV shows on their mobile devices and televisions. The offerings will come from major studios including HBO, Sony Pictures, Viacom and Warner Brothers. Scrapbook and catalog browsing features have also been added.

One wild card working in Barnes & Noble's favor this holiday: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target, increasingly threatened by Amazon's online retail operations, won't carry the Kindle. The retailers will sell Barnes & Noble's Nooks, as well as other tablets like the iPad.

"This is going to be a lot of fun to watch over the next year," McQuivey said.

The new Nooks are available for pre-order online and in stores beginning on Wednesday and will begin shipping in late October and begin arriving in stores in early November.

Cutting costs and increasing operating activities can increase the profit of the businesses significantly. However, business owners need powerful and reliable software to achieve these goals.

Smart accountancy is a leading name among the accounting and business management software solution providers in the country. The company provides complete and personalized business solution software in order to help businesses simplify and increase productivity levels at reasonable costs.

?We at Smart Accountancy know that when small businesses adopt Open ERP, they need services of a professional accountant to maintain financial records. Their options are limited; they can either choose to receive training or keep trying until they master the skills?, added the spokesperson at smart Accountancy.
