High-tech product announcements this fall

It's high season for consumer electronics. Manufacturers of various gadgets are unveiling their holiday lineups. Add to that products surrounding a new version of Windows coming out next month.

Here's a recap of the announcements so far:

? Tuesday: Microsoft Corp. releases the first major update to its server operating system since 2009, a prelude to releasing Windows 8 to consumers in October. Microsoft says Windows Server 2012 adds features that make it easier to manage large clusters of servers in data centers remotely.

? Wednesday: Nokia Corp. unveils its first phones running the next version of Windows. The company didn't reveal prices and says only that the Windows Phone 8 devices will be available in the fourth quarter "in select markets." The two devices are under Nokia's Lumia brand.

Motorola Mobility, under new owner Google Inc., announces three smartphones borrowing the Razr brand, the name of the hit clamshell phone from 2004. The $99 Razr M is to be in Verizon Wireless stores in a week. Two higher-end models will come later.

? Thursday: Amazon.com Inc. announces four new Kindle Fire tablet computers as it steps up competition with Apple Inc. and its iPad. Two of the models have screens nearly as large as the iPad's, at lower prices. Those will start shipping in November, while the smaller, 7-inch models will start selling next week. Amazon also refreshes its line of stand-alone e-readers.

Rare Form of Autism Might Benefit from Nutrition Supplement

People who have a very rare form of autism may benefit from treatment with a common nutritional supplement, a new study suggests.

The results show some people who have symptoms of both autism and epilepsy have a rare genetic mutation that causes them to have abnormally low levels of essential nutrients called branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs).

When the researchers fed a diet enriched with BCAAs to mice that were engineered to have that same genetic mutation, the diet completely reversed the symptoms, the researchers said. The mice not fed the enriched diet showed the symptoms of epilepsy and other neurological problems.

However, it's not clear whether the findings will translate to people. Because the mutation is so rare, the researchers have not yet studied the effects of adding BCAA supplements to the diet of people with this particular form of autism, and it's possible a change in diet may only be beneficial if started early in life (the patients currently known to have the mutation are no longer young children).

Still, the findings suggest there may be other forms of autism with genetic causes that can be treated, "and we need to find them," said study researcher Gaia Novarino, a staff scientist at the University of California, San Diego.

Patients could also be screened for the new genetic mutation, or related mutations, to predict whether they will develop the disease, the researchers said.

The study is published online today (Sept. 6) in the journal Science.

Genetic mutation

The researchers analyzed genetic information from individuals in three families of Turkish, Egyptian or Libyan descent, all of whom had children with autism, intellectual disability, and either seizures or abnormal brain wave activity. The families were consanguineous, meaning the parents were closely related by blood. (Children of closely related individuals are known to be at increased risk for genetic disorders.)

Six of the children had mutations in a gene called BCKDK. In contrast, none of the 200 healthy people tested for the study had the mutation.

The result of this mutation is that the body breaks down BCAAs more rapidly than normal. Indeed, the children in the study with the mutation all had below-normal BCAA levels. Their BCAA levels could be increased without ill effects by providing them with BCAA supplements bought from a health food store, the researchers said.

The researchers next need to study whether the patients' seizures and autism symptoms improve with the nutritional supplement, a process that could take some time. They will need to find more people with this mutation in order for their study to have scientifically meaningful results.

Potential treatment

"It's really encouraging from the point of view of treatment," said Valerie Hu, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at George Washington University, who researches the genetics of autism and was not involved in the study. "It shows that some forms of autism ... [are] a result of some metabolic dysfunction," Hu said.

Hu said that, as a mother of a child with autism, the search for a cure often can seem hopeless. "When you think that this disorder is a result of faulty brain development, what are you going to do about that?" Hu said.

But if studies show that some types of autism are due to metabolic abnormities, it makes sense that correcting such abnormities could improve symptoms, Hu said.

The UC San Diego researchers suspect the BCKDK mutation causes both seizures and neurological problems. It's possible that because levels of BCAAs are low, a higher concentration of other amino acids find their way into the brain and cause problems, the researchers said.

Finding that a mental condition is caused by a metabolic problem is not unprecedented. The condition phenylketonuria, or PKU, occurs when the body cannot properly break down the amino acid phenylalanine. Levels of this amino acid can build up and cause brain damage ? leading to symptoms such as seizures and mental retardation, according to the National Institutes of Health. The condition is treatable if children follow a strict diet with low levels of phenylalanine.

Pass it on: One type of autism caused by a rare genetic mutation may be treatable.

Texas Outdoors Insurance Specialist Says Now is Best Time to Get ...

***Thank you for visiting our website. Visit us again.***

Katy, TX, August 25, 2012 Texas hunting liability insurance specialist, Texas Outdoor Insurance (http://texasoutdoorinsurance.com) is advising outdoor sports venues, hunting clubs and ranch Business owners to insure their businesses now before the 2012 hunting and outdoor season begins in a few months.

The Katy, Texas based outdoor sports and hunting insurance agency said taking care of the insurance needs before the season kicks off is a smart decision.

?What we have seen over the years is that most ranchers, farmers, hunting club and other Texas outdoor business owners do is they wait until the season begins before looking for insurance coverage for their properties,? Frank Hursh, owner of Texas Outdoor Insurance said this week in his office in Katy.

?That is not a very good idea. If you wait until the season begins, it may be too late to protect yourself and your business from damaging lawsuits should an accident occur on your property,? he said.

Hursh has been in the hunting insurance business for decades. He said waiting could also make outdoor insurance policies more expensive for these business owners.

?Insurance policies cannot be backdated so waiting is not the right thing to do. Also because the season has already begun, trying to get adequate insurance could become quite expensive,? he added.

Katy, TX based Texas Outdoor Insurance has been helping Texas outdoor business owners with their hunting and other outdoors liability insurance needs.

?We are experts at this. We have been helping our customers with their insurance needs for decades. We have the personnel trained to help Texas farmers, ranchers, shooting club owners and RV Park and Campground owners with their insurance needs,? Hursh added.

A new history of the 21st century | Progress | News and debate from ...

Bush and Obama

Indulge me, if you will, in a thought experiment. Imagine your memory of the past 15 years has been erased, and you are learning about 21st century geopolitics for the first time.

In your history book there are two American presidents with different foreign policy approaches.

?

The first conducted a covert war, striking at his enemies from afar using semi-automated flying machines. He paid little attention to international norms and state sovereignty, and under his campaign civilians were often killed as collateral damage.

The implications of the strikes were far-reaching, not least for countries in the firing line where political instability grew and the US was viewed with increasing opprobrium. The president?s actions risked the emergence of a new generation of radicalised terrorists and triggered an arms race as world powers developed their own pilotless bombers. The nature of warfare was irreversibly changed as the campaign could be waged indefinitely, without pause.

The second American president launched a regular, overt war against a tyrannical leader who (it was thought) held stocks of devastating weapons he had proven willing to use in the past and had habitually hidden from international observers. After trying and failing to build international consensus at the UN, the president led his country, along with a handful of allies, in a short war against the tyrant, destroying his military threat within a few weeks.

Despite the war unleashing a devastating insurgency and latent sectarian strife, with thousands of civilians killed, the invaded country eventually became a semi-functioning democracy, though significant problems remain to this day.

Which president do you think was celebrated and admired? Which one was vilified and seen as a callous warmonger?

Not the one you might think.

Of course, both of these presidents are very real: President Obama, whose use of unmanned aerial vehicles to strike at terrorist suspects has come to define his first term?s foreign policy*; and President George W Bush, whose Iraq war has been regularly cited among Washington?s greatest military misadventures.

While the Iraq war is still widely condemned, with Archbishop Desmond Tutu even calling for Tony Blair to face trial, Obama?s drone campaign is tolerated, even celebrated. Back in February, eight out of 10 Americans approved of his use of UAVs in a Washington Post-ABC poll. Despite misgivings from certain quarters there has been no large-scale opposition on either side of the Atlantic. The Stop the War Coalition has flirted with anti-drone protests, but the venom of the Bush era has not materialised.

Commentators are undecided: some op-eds spit rage at Obama?s supposed callousness, while others praise unmanned-aerial vehicles as the cheap, bloodless (for the protagonist at least) future of international intervention.

For advocates of a progressive foreign policy, this ambiguity feels unnatural. We are used to Manichean debates about war and peace, good and evil, Bush versus everyone else. What are we supposed to think about ethically confusing automated air strikes that have broad-based domestic support and (at least in the short-term) seem to work?

As Labour develops its vision for the future of British internationalism, we are going to have to get used to this ambiguity. In an era of constrained budgets, overstretched armed forces and war-weary electorates, old certainties around intervention and moral purpose will be increasingly difficult to pin down.

What is clear is that we will need to put visceral opposition to particular policies to one side and develop a foreign policy framework that is able to achieve broad-based support. Obama?s drone campaign, for all its faults, meets this criterion.

The worst thing for Labour would be to back itself into a corner in an attempt to exorcise Iraq demons, or to cast aside potential policy approaches before assessing the broader landscape. Obama?s non-ideological approach to safeguarding US security has largely taken foreign policy off the table in November?s election ? a rarity for a progressive candidate. Labour should take note.

?????????????????????????????

*Though the use of UAVs began under Bush, Obama considerably increased the number and scope of such operations and has incorporated drone strikes into a broader counterterrorism strategy

(AP) ? Rory McIlroy got the start he wanted Monday at the Deutsche Bank Championship, erasing a three-shot deficit in just five holes. The finish was hardly a masterpiece, except for the part when golf's No. 1 player posed with the trophy.

Boy Wonder didn't make it easy on himself on Labor Day at the TPC Boston. He tore up the turf on a tee shot that traveled 170 yards, and that was the only fairway he hit over the last five holes.

He had to make a 6-foot putt to save par from a bunker, and a 5-foot putt to save bogey after a pitch sailed from one side of the green to the other. And he had to wait as Louis Oosthuizen's birdie putt to force a playoff slid below the hole.

"I had a couple of wobbles coming in, but I obviously did enough and I'm very excited to get a victory," McIlroy said.

That's all anyone will remember.

On a leaderboard packed with some of the biggest names in golf ? McIlroy, Oosthuizen, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson ? the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland took a giant leap toward establishing himself as the best in the game.

With four birdies in six holes at the start, and limiting the damage from his mistakes at the end, McIlroy closed with a 4-under 67 for a one-shot victory over Oosthuizen, joining Woods as the only three-time winners this year on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy goes to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup. And with one of his wins being the PGA Championship, that might be enough for his peers to vote him PGA Tour player of the year. He also has a comfortable gap in the world ranking, and could be tough to catch the rest of the year unless Woods were to win the next two FedEx Cup events.

"He's not No. 1 in the world for nothing," Oosthuizen said. "He's a great young talent, a lot of majors left for him to win. He's such a cool kid on the course. It's great playing with him. He makes tough shots look really easy sometimes, especially long irons.

"I don't think the back nine he hit the ball that great after what he did on the front nine, but he did what he had to do."

Woods made an early charge to get back in the hunt, though he never got closer than three shots until a two-putt birdie on the par-5 18th gave him a 66. He finished in third place, two shots behind, and earned enough money to become the first player to surpass $100 million in PGA Tour earnings.

Woods attributed that to higher purses, though he's responsible for those.

"I think we got some interest in the game of golf," Woods said. "A lot more youth, that's for sure."

One of those kids ? McIlroy ? keeps winning. The Honda Classic in March. The record eight-shot win in the PGA Championship. And now a FedEx Cup playoff event in Boston.

"Three is a great number," McIlroy said. "I'd like to make it four ? or five ? after the FedEx Cup."

Phil Mickelson also had a 66 and tied for fourth, along with Dustin Johnson, who had a 70 and likely played his way onto the Ryder Cup team. Brandt Snedeker made a strong case for a captain's pick with a 65-67 weekend to finish sixth.

Davis Love III will announce his four picks Tuesday morning in New York.

McIlroy had a three-shot lead with six holes to play, and only a clutch bogey putt on the 17th hole kept him from losing all of his lead.

Oosthuizen, who had to cope with pain in his right shoulder earlier in the round, came back with two birdies on the back to get within one shot. McIlroy hit a chip over the 17th green into more rough, and it looked as if he would struggle to make bogey.

Oosthuizen, however, missed the green from 140 yards in the fairway, chipped poorly to 10 feet and missed his par putt, and McIlroy calmly sank his 5-foot bogey putt to stay one shot ahead.

"The 17th hole cost me," Oosthuizen said.

McIlroy finished 20-under 264.

It was the second time this year that Oosthuizen, who won the British Open by seven shots at St. Andrews two years ago, failed to win after leading going into the final round. McIlroy made an early charge with three straight birdies, but the turning point came on the fifth hole when Oosthuizen felt pain in his shoulder on a tee shot that sailed into the trees and led to double bogey.

The pain went away on the back, which the South African attributed to an adrenaline rush.

McIlroy and Oosthuizen turned it into a two-man race, with Woods lurking until he couldn't convert enough putts. In the end, neither could Oosthuizen. He missed from just inside 10 feet for par on the 17th and from 12 feet on the 18th.

"I probably made all my putts yesterday," Oosthuizen said.

There was other drama at the Deutsche Bank Championship, though it was not nearly as compelling as the top of the leaderboard.

Charley Hoffman went from the first page of the leaderboard to an unimaginable collapse until he steadied himself at the end. Hoffman, who was 13 under after a birdie on the eighth hole, played his next nine holes in 8-over par, including a quadruple-bogey 7 on the par-3 11th. He came to the 18th needing a par to finish among the top 70 in the FedEx Cup and advance to the third playoff event next week in Indianapolis.

He went over the green in two, barely chipped onto the putting surface, and then ran his putt 12 feet by the hole. He made the putt for par, and moves on.

"I didn't expect to be playing next week," Hoffman said. "Shooting 42 on the back nine, I don't think I deserved to play next week. But I guess I've got another chance."

Others who advanced included Dicky Pride, who birdied his last two holes to get the 70th spot by one stroke over Jonas Blixt; and Chris Kirk, who stumbled at the start only to birdie four of his last five holes.

Oosthuizen had a three-shot lead at the start of the final round, though he was never expecting an easy time. McIlroy rallied to cut a six-shot deficit in half on the back nine of the third round to give himself a chance, another example why he is No. 1 in the world.

Sure enough, McIlroy came out firing with three straight birdies, starting with a two-putt from the fringe on the par-5 second.

The fifth hole changed everything.

Oosthuizen reached for his shoulder after a horrific snap hook off the tee. The ball dove into the woods and landed in the middle of shoulder-high bushes, leaving him no option but to take a penalty drop out of the hazard. He laid up short of the creek and two-putted for double bogey. They were tied, because McIlroy's tee shot found a clump of native grass on the edge of a bunker, and he had to chip out short of the creek and made bogey.

Oosthuizen, though, was clearly hurting. He couldn't get through his swing on the next tee shot, which sailed into the bunker and kept him from attacking the pin. That's what McIlroy did, hitting 9-iron into 3 feet for birdie and his first lead. He never gave it back.

Me?Don't Shame Me! Communicating With Fitness Clubs and ...

by Amy Herskowitz, MSc

Have you ever had an experience with a health club, fitness class or personal trainer that left you feeling like your body was unacceptable or that the primary goal of your workout was to change your weight or appearance? Unfortunately, this kind of encounter occurs often and to individuals across a broad weight spectrum in our current body-judging, thin-obsessed culture. While health and fitness come in all sizes, many leaders in the fitness industry still choose to focus on marketing an image of a ?fit body? that is incredibly limited.

Perhaps these interactions leave you, like me, feeling less than motivated to exercise in that gym, take that class, or work with that trainer, when what you really want is to find a way to move your body, have some fun, find some balance, improve your strength and flexibility, decrease your stress and increase your stamina.

Recently I chose to communicate my frustrations to the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the fitness club chain that I belong to, which operates more than 275 gyms across Canada and boasts of a membership that includes 1 out of every 43 Canadians. My goal was to share my disappointment and confusion regarding their contradictory messaging throughout the gyms that I?ve visited. While your specific situation is likely to be different from mine, I am hoping that a number of the issues I raise and the HAES? educational points I share may be useful to those of you who would like to speak up about your own frustrations with the fitness industry.

Dear Fitness Club Owner,

I have been a member of your club for almost a year. I enjoy the convenience of where my local gym facilities are situated , the variety you offer in group exercise programming, and the fact that even when I?m on vacation, I can maintain my workouts by finding a local club where I am visiting (which I did this past July). I am, however, confused by your corporate messaging about weight loss and health, which I find to be contradictory at best and hypocritical at worst.

When I first joined the gym located at my office building, in October 2011, I was greeted with posters of a disembodied female belly wearing an ill-fitting dress shirt and a byline that read something to the effect of: ?Stop blaming the dryer.? The implicit messages in that ad were that fat is bad, it can, and should be ?worked off,? and individuals (particularly women, since it was a woman in the ad) have no one to blame for their fat but themselves. Similarly, some of the personal trainers and exercise instructors have focused primarily on appearance such as weight, shape and muscular definition, or ?working off love handles,? rather than a person?s abilities, their enjoyment of the movement and/or the intrinsic health benefits that everybody can derive from engaging in regular physical activity.

In short, some of the staff obviously conflate weight with health and believe that weight loss and thinness are always good things, and reinforce these beliefs to members. This is perpetuated by the corporate messaging you exhibit through your website, selected posters, signage, and even in the content of club newsletters.

By contrast, I attended one of your women?s-only facilities in July for a week and was greeted with a sign that read: No judgement. EveryBODY Welcome Here. In that gym, there were no signs that discriminated against fat bodies, no posters that idealized only lean, muscular bodies, or made shaming, stereotypical, stigmatizing statements about weight, fat, shape or ability. There was a consistent message throughout: You are welcome here. I photographed that sign and featured it on my personal Facebook page because I was so pleased with the sentiment.

When I shower and change at the club in my office building after a workout, I listen to the radio that plays your programming on a loop. I have heard the repeated message that ?This gym franchise is not about what you see in the mirror but about photographs on the mantle ? it?s about balance [sic].? The ad even states that: ?our approach includes pizza, ice cream and a cold beer on a hot day.? The message about balance is there but it?s not consistent. Instead, balance is repeatedly trumped by the stereotypical fascination with hard bodies, aesthetics and by our cultural obsession with weight loss and thinness.

I believe in the Health At Every Size? paradigm that respects and accepts the diversity of bodies (weight, size, age and ability) and affirms that everybody can reap health benefits by engaging in joyful movement and by eating according to individual nutritional needs, respecting hunger, satiety, appetite and pleasure. All bodies can improve in stamina, endurance and strength by participating in regular physical activity that is fun and challenging. The Health At Every Size approach to wellness is a weight-neutral one that takes into consideration the scientific literature on dieting, nutrition, weight loss, disordered eating, fitness and health.

On your website, it says, ?We take care of what?s most important to you.? People only take care of the things they value. Fat is ubiquitously devalued in our culture and fat people are constantly bombarded by messages telling them how ugly, costly, sick, and weak (among other things) they are because of their weight. No one can determine another person?s health status merely by assessing his or her appearance. If your fitness chain were to focus on the HAES? principles and ensure consistent messaging throughout gym facilities across the country, then I believe your business would dramatically improve, with all bodies feeling welcome to participate, to play, to learn new things and challenge themselves physically, and feel as though they belonged. What an inspiring environment that would be!

If you and/or your leadership team are interested in finding out more about the HAES approach, then I invite you to visit the Association for Size Diversity And Health (ASDAH) website at: www.sizediversityandhealth.org

I would also be willing to discuss the HAES principles and how they pertain to fitness classes, personal training, and corporate messaging with your staff at my local club or elsewhere.

Yours, wishing for a consistently welcoming space for my body and for others,

Amy S. Herskowitz, MSc

Album of Charles Manson music to be released on vinyl after Kickstarter campaign

A prison photo of Charles Manson (ABC News)An independent record store owner is preparing to release a record of largely unheard Charles Manson songs, after running a successful online fundraising campaign to sponsor the effort.

"Be a part of history, help spread the music of Charles Manson," Manuel Vasquez wrote on the project's Kickstarter page. "This project is not about death, drugs,1969, etc... It is about MUSIC."

Vasquez, 26, says he plans to issue 999 vinyl pressings of the songs, which were recorded by Manson in prison. Manson, 77, is serving a life sentence for conspiracy in connection to the murders of Sharon Tate and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. The leader of the infamous Manson Family reportedly gave his personal blessing to Vasquez's effort but will not receive any proceeds from the sales.

"I've gotten some hate mail from it," Vasquez told the Los Angeles Times. "There are people not appreciating the release of music by him. People say they don't understand why I'd want to associate myself with this or why I would be interested in releasing it."

Contributors to the Kickstarter campaign were given the chance to have their names associated with Manson's music. Those who donated enough to the project will have their names included on the album's liner notes and will receive a piece of artwork crafted by Manson himself.

Still, even Vasquez admits that his project's popularity has to do more with the Manson name than the quality of music itself.

"Most people won't like it. It probably requires an acquired taste," he told the L.A. Times. "It's really low-fi, mono."

A video posted on the Kickstarter page contains a recording of one of the forthcoming album's songs:

This isn't the first time controversy has been associated with Manson's music. In 1993, rock band Guns N' Roses released a cover of Manson's "Look At Your Game Girl," which was originally recorded by Manson in 1967 to help pay for his criminal defense fees. There was a heated dispute within the band over whether to cover the song. Eventually, Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose recorded his version of the tune with only one of the band's official members joining him for the performance. The song and accompanying album were considered both commercial and critical failures.

Holy Family Guild: Holidays and Holydays in foreign parts

Holidays and Holydays in foreign parts

I haven't posted in a while due to a wonderful holiday in Spain and France (more on that later!) First an update on the intrepid Compostela pilgrims.
Both girls completed 'The Way', going beyond Compostela to Finisterre and then Muxia. They met us at the start of our summer vacation in Pamplona (having bussed back!) Both looked remarkably well for the experience although there had been many hard days along the way. We continue to pray that many graces will ensue. I hope to relay some of their Camino Impressions (with permission!) in future posts.
We travelled onward together to our holiday home near the Opus Dei Shrine of Torreciudad and, after a couple of weeks, our group dispersed leaving my husband and I to meander home through various interesting places in France. In the next few posts I will introduce my readers to one or two of them. Meanwhile I hope you had, or are having, safe and happy holidays.

(AP) ? An associate of San Francisco Giants All-Star Melky Cabrera purchased a website and attempted to create evidence to support a claim that the outfielder inadvertently took the substance that caused a positive drug test, Major League Baseball said.

Baseball officials uncovered the scheme as Cabrera prepared his case to challenge the test. Cabrera's grievance then was dropped, and MLB announced a 50-game suspension Wednesday.

The New York Daily News first reported on the scheme Sunday.

A team of six-to-seven investigators from MLB spent several weeks working to uncover the plan, a baseball official familiar with the probe told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because MLB didn't authorize anyone to discuss the matter publicly.

It's the first such case MLB has had and officials hope that uncovering the scheme will discourage similar attempts.

The person said baseball had referred the case to federal investigators.

A second baseball official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said additional discipline against Cabrera was unlikely.

Cabrera, MVP of the All-Star game last month, tested positive for testosterone, MLB said.

The person said Juan Nunez, who works with Cabrera's agents, purchased an existing website and attempted to alter it in a manner that would allow Cabrera to claim the positive test was caused by a substance obtained through the website. The News reported Nunez paid $10,000 for the website.

"If you create a new website, you would know when the website was created," the baseball official said. "At least they were smart enough to buy an existing website."

The baseball official said MLB investigators were able to use their forensic resources to trace the website back to Nunez.

Cabrera is represented by brothers Sam and Seth Levinson of ACES, a sports management company based in Brooklyn. The Levinsons told the Daily News that Nunez was a "paid consultant" of their agency.

"The MLBPA has clearly stated that ACES has no connection to the website or this matter and, as reported, Juan Nunez has taken full responsibility for his acts," Seth Levinson told The Associated Press. "There is nothing more we can add and we will allow our reputation in the industry for 27 years to speak for itself."

The second baseball official said MLB intends to ask the Major League Baseball Players Association, which regulates agents, to follow up on the situation at ACES.

Cabrera was enjoying the best season of his big league career, helping the Giants contend for a postseason berth. He was hitting .346 with 11 homers and 60 RBIs, but will miss the rest of the regular season and the start of the playoffs, if the Giants advance that far.

A former member of the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals, Cabrera is eligible for free agency after the World Series.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy declined to discuss the allegations against Cabrera before the Giants played the Padres in San Diego. He didn't defend his player's actions, either.

"You can be world-class parents and your kids can go south or have some issues. We can't follow guys 24/7, and it comes down to choices. (Cabrera) is a grown man, he's a veteran," Bochy said. "These are unfortunate things and we'll continue to work at cleaning out baseball."
