Police: Colorado attack planned for months

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? The shooting suspect accused in a deadly rampage inside a Colorado theater planned the attack with "calculation and deliberation," police said Saturday, receiving deliveries by mail that authorities believe armed him for battle and were used to rig his apartment with dozens of bombs.

Meanwhile, new details about 24-year-old James Holmes emerged, including summer jobs the suspect held in Southern California as a camp counselor and as an intern at a prominent research institute.

In Aurora, investigators spent hours Saturday removing explosive materials from inside Holmes' suburban Denver apartment a day after police said he opened fire and set off gas canisters in a theater minutes into a premiere of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises." The attack left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

His apartment was rigged with jars of liquids, explosives and chemicals that were booby trapped to kill "whoever entered it," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said, noting it would have likely been one of his officers.

Holmes received several mail deliveries over four months to his home and school and bought thousands rounds of ammunition on the Internet.

"He had a high volume of deliveries," Oates said. "We think this explains how he got his hands on the magazine, ammunition," he said, as well as the rigged explosives in his apartment.

"What we're seeing here is evidence of some calculation and deliberation," Oates added.

Inside the apartment, FBI Special agent James Yacone said bomb technicians neutralized what he called a "hyperbolic mixture" and an improvised explosive device containing an unknown substance. There also were multiple containers of accelerants.

"It was an extremely dangerous environment," Yacone said at a news conference, noting that anyone who walked in would have sustained "significant injuries" or been killed.

By late afternoon, all hazards have been removed from the Holmes' apartment and residents in surrounding buildings were allowed to return home, police said.

The exception was Holmes' apartment building, where authorities were still collecting evidence. Inside the apartment, authorities began covering the windows with black plastic to prevent onlookers from seeing in. Before they did, a man in an ATF T-shirt could be seen measuring a poster on a closet that advertised a DVD called "Soldiers of Misfortune." The poster showed several figures in various positions playing paintball, some wearing masks.

About 8 p.m., police left the apartment building carrying a laptop computer and a hard drive.

While authorities continued to refuse to discuss a possible motive for one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history, details about Holmes' background as a student and would-be scientist trickled out Saturday.

Holmes had recently withdrawn from a competitive graduate program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado-Denver, where he was one of six students at the school to get National Institutes of Health grant money. He recently took an intense three-part, oral exam that marks the end of the freshman year of the four-year program there, but university officials would not say if he passed, citing privacy concerns.

In a resume posted on Monster.com, Holmes listed himself as an "aspiring scientist" and said he was looking for a job as a laboratory technician.

The resume, first obtained by The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, paints a picture of a brilliant young man brimming with potential: He worked as a summer intern at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla in 2006 and mapped the neurons of Zebra finches and studied the flight muscles of hummingbirds while an undergraduate at the University of California, Riverside.

He also worked as a cabin counselor to underprivileged children at a summer camp in Los Angeles in 2008. In a statement, Camp Max Straus confirmed Holmes had worked at Camp Max Straus for eight weeks. It provided no other detail about Holmes but said such counselors are generally responsible for the care and guidance of roughly 10 children.

Neighbors and former classmates in California said although Holmes was whip-smart, he was a loner who said little and was easily forgotten ? until this week.

Mary Muscari, a criminology professor at Regis University in Denver who studies mass killings, said she was not surprised Holmes was studying neuroscience and mental disorders.

"It could be he was interested in that because he knows there's something different in him," she said.

Holmes was in solitary confinement for his protection at a county detention facility Saturday, held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder. He was set for an initial hearing on Monday and has been appointed a public defender.

Among the deceased victims was a 6-year-old girl and a man who died on his 27th birthday and a day before his anniversary. Families grieved and waited at hospitals, which reported at least seven wounded still in critical condition Saturday and others with injuries that likely are permanent.

Veronica Moser, 6, had gone to the movies with her mother, who was drifting in and out of consciousness in a hospital intensive care unit, bullets lodged in her throat and a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

"Nobody can tell her about it," Annie Dalton said of her niece, Ashley Moser. "She is in critical condition, but all she's asking about is her daughter."

Veronica had just started swimming lessons on Tuesday, Dalton said.

"She was excited about life as she should be. She's a 6-year-old girl," her great aunt said.

Another victim, 27-year-old Matt McQuinn, was killed after diving in front of his girlfriend and her older brother to shield them from the gunfire, said his family's attorney, Rob Scott of Dayton, Ohio.

Alex Sullivan had planned a weekend of fun, first ringing in his 27th birthday with friends at the special midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" and then celebrating his first wedding anniversary on Sunday.

"He was a very, very good young man," said Sullivan's uncle, Joe Loewenguth. "He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him."

During the attack early Friday, Oates said Holmes used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting theater-goers. He had bought the weapons at local gun stores within the last two months. He recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

Holmes also bought an urban assault vest, two magazine holders and a knife for just over $300 on July 2 from an online supplier of tactical gear for police and military personnel, according to the company.

Chad Weinman, CEO of TacticalGear.com, said his company processes thousands of orders each day, and there was nothing unusual in the one that Holmes placed.

"Everything Mr. Holmes purchased on July 2 is commercially available," Weinman said, adding he was "appalled" that the material was sold to Holmes before the shooting.

The Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. "The Dark Knight Rises" earned $30.6 million in Friday morning midnight screenings, and, according to industry estimates, roughly $75 to 77 million on that day. That put it on track for a weekend total of around $165 million, which would be the second-highest opening weekend ever, following "The Avengers."

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

Nokia loss widens on slumping smartphone sales

(AP) ? Nokia's net loss nearly quadrupled in the second quarter on sagging sales of smartphones, a market in which the company is struggling to regain ground lost to rivals including Apple and Samsung.

Shares in the company jumped, however, as sales of low-end phones buoyed revenue and shipments of the new Lumia phones, which run on Windows software and will replace the older smartphone models, were not as bad as feared.

Nokia posted Thursday a net loss of ?1.41 billion ($1.72 billion), compared with a loss of a ?368 million in the same period last year.

Overall sales were down 19 percent to ?7.54 billion, not as low as analysts' forecast of ?7.36 billion, according to financial data provider FactSet. Smartphone sales were the weak point, dropping 34 percent to ?1.54 billion, as shipments of the new Lumia devices could not make up for a slump in demand for the older models.

Nokia shares jumped 17 percent to ?1.60 in Helsinki. Analyst Mikko Ervasti at Evli Bank in Helsinki said Nokia performed better than expected in lower-end devices, boosting the total number of Nokia phones shipped in the quarter to 84 million, compared to market expectations of 80 million.

The Finnish company was the world's leading mobile phone maker for more than a decade but was overtaken by Samsung in the first quarter, according to research firm Gartner.

Facing stiff competition from Apple's iPhone and devices running on Google's Android software, Nokia tried to stem the decline in smartphones in part through a partnership with Microsoft announced last year, replacing Nokia's existing Symbian operating platform with Microsoft's Windows Phone software.

A drop in sales was expected during this transition period, and Nokia said that the decline of Symbian phones dragged down sales in all regions expect for North America, where the decline was "more than offset" by sales of the Lumia devices. Nokia said it sold 4 million Lumia phones worldwide in the quarter.

"That was a relief. It took away some fears that the market had," Ervasti said.

Questions arose about Lumia sales in the U.S. earlier this week when Nokia and AT&T halved the price of the flagship Lumia 900 to $50, just three months after its introduction. Nokia called the cut "a normal strategy that is put in place during the life cycle of most phones."

Nokia's global market share has steadily shrunk from the peak of 40 percent in 2008 to 29 percent in 2011 and is expected to dwindle further this year. Meanwhile, Nokia shares have fallen to their lowest level since the 1990's, plunging below ?2 in mid-June.

Last month, Nokia announced plans to slash 10,000 jobs and close down research and development facilities in Ulm, Germany, and Burnaby, Canada, as well as its main manufacturing plant in Salo, Finland. Nokia aims to save ?1.6 billion through these measures by the end of next year.

In the earnings statement, Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop said the third quarter would "remain difficult" as the phase-out of Symbian phones continues. He said the upcoming launch of a new version of the Windows operating system ? Windows Phone 8 ? would be an "important catalyst for Lumia."

Nokia is expected to be among the first manufacturers to launch Windows Phone 8 devices in the fourth quarter, but Elop gave no details on that.

"We're committed to Windows Phone as our primary smartphone strategy," he said in a conference call later Thursday. "We've learned that it takes a tremendous amount of work to break through ... and we're viewing the launch of Windows Phone 8 as an important moment in this journey."

Military: Troops can wear uniforms in gay pride parade

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (AP) ? The Defense Department on Thursday announced it is allowing service members to march in uniform in a gay pride parade for the first time in U.S. history.

In a memorandum sent to all its branches, the department said it was making the allowance for San Diego's Gay Pride Parade on Saturday even though its policy generally bars troops from marching in uniform in parades.

The Defense Department said it did so because organizers had encouraged military personnel to march in their uniform and the event was getting national attention.

The move came only weeks after the Pentagon joined the rest of the U.S. government for the first time in marking June as gay pride month and made an official salute to gay and lesbian service members.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta vowed in a video message to remove as many barriers as possible to making the military a model of equal opportunity and said gays and lesbians can be proud in uniform with the repeal last year of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law.

Last year, San Diego's Gay Pride Parade had the nation's largest contingency of active-duty troops participate before the military lifted its ban on openly gay service members. About 200 service members last year wore T-shirts with their branch's name.

Former sailor Sean Sala, who organized the military's participation in the parade, said he wanted service members to wear their official uniform this year to show there is no longer anything to hide.

"My soul is on fire," he said after hearing the news Thursday. "They don't fight in T-shirts. They fight in uniforms. This is about showing who they are."

The Pentagon said the allowance is only for this year's parade in San Diego and does not extend beyond that. Military personnel wearing civilian clothes do not need permission to march in any parades.

The Defense Department policy says personnel cannot march in parades in uniform unless they receive approval from their commanding ofiicers or other Pentagon-approved authorities.

Sala believes there will be no going back after Saturday. He said he has reached his dream in seeing the U.S. military sanction participation in a gay pride parade, as the armed forces have done in Canada and Great Britain,

Uniformed soldiers in those countries have marched down the streets of Toronto and London next to scantily clad men, drag queens and civil rights activists.

"I think across the country we will start seeing active-duty members in uniform march in pride parades," Sala said.

San Diego Pride Executive Director Dwayne Crenshaw called it an historic moment.

"San Diego Pride is honored to have the privilege of celebrating our country and our service members with dignity and respect," he said. "The fight for equality is not over, and it is not easy, but this is a giant leap in the right direction."

Before Thursday, several service members wanting to participate in San Diego's parade were told they could not do so in uniform. Others were granted permission by their commanding officers.

"I think many people thought after 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' was gone, discriminatory things would be eradicated," Sala said. "But now these parades have become a very sticky subject as far as commanders using their own discretion because they are showing either a bias toward a pride parade, or the right view, which this is about recognizing who people are."

Before the repeal, gay troops could serve but could be discharged if they revealed their sexual orientation. At the same time, a commanding officer was prohibited from asking a service member whether he or she was gay.

More than 300 service members have signed up to participate this year in the San Diego parade. It was unclear how many will wear their uniform.

The Defense Department said in its message to the service members that they should adhere to policy regarding behavior while wearing their uniforms.

Service members in uniform cannot appear to endorse or selectively benefit groups or individuals, provide a platform for a political message, or appear to be commercially sponsored. They also must ensure their presence in uniform is not intended to increase sales and business traffic.

Air Force Officer Joanna Gasca was among those who risked marching last year in a T-shirt. Her commanding officer had given her permission to do so this year before Thursday's memorandum was issued.

"It was absolutely thrilling last year to walk down the street," the 47-year-old Air Force recruiter said. "But this year ? to be able to march in uniform ? wow! I'm speechless."

UN approves last 30 days for UN observers in Syria

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a resolution Friday extending the 300-strong U.N. observer force in Syria for a final 30 days but leaving open the possibility of an extension if the Syrian government stops using heavy weapons and the civil war's level of violence is reduced.

The resolution gives a possible lifeline to the unarmed observers who were sent to Syria three months ago to monitor a cease-fire, which has never taken place, and the implementation of international envoy Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan, which was been flouted by President Bashar Assad's government.

The council voted shortly after Russia's ambassador to France, Alexander Orlov, said he believes Assad is ready to step down "in a civilized way." The Syrian government immediately denied it, and the Russian Foreign Ministry said his statements were taken out of context and have been "wrongly interpreted."

The mandate of the observer force had been set to expire Friday. The observers suspended patrols in the face of escalating violence.

The force's future had been left in limbo by the Russian and Chinese vetoes of a Western-backed U.N. resolution Thursday aimed at pressuring Assad's government to end the escalating civil war by threatening sanctions if Assad's troops and heavy weapons were not withdrawn from populated areas in 10 days.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin had said he would veto the original British-drafted resolution on the observer mission and support a rival Pakistani text that would have extended the mission for 45 days, with the possibility of further renewals. But after closed-door consultations called by Pakistan, all 15 council members reached agreement on a revised British text.

The future of Assad has been a subject of intense debate, especially following this week's attack in Damascus that targeted his inner circle and killed his defense minister and the deputy defense minister, who was the president's brother-in-law.

Orlov, the Russian ambassador in Paris, said in an interview with Radio France Internationale that Assad's acceptance of an international agreement in June for a transition toward a more democratic regime, and his subsequent step of naming a representative to negotiate the transition, meant that he was prepared to give up leadership.

"Personally ... I think it will be difficult for him to stay in office, given everything that's happened," Orlov told RFI.

But in a subsequent interview with BFM TV, he backtracked on his personal assessment.

Asked if he thinks Assad's days are numbered, Orlov replied: "No, I don't think so. I say it's for Syrian people to determine that ... Is the regime coming to an end or not? It's not for me to say."

He also said he was misunderstood.

"If President Assad accepted this (agreement) that foresees a transition, it means that perhaps within himself he is ready to leave if that was the result of the negotiations. It's because of this that I called it a civilized departure," he told BFM.

Orlov noted in the original RFI interview that Assad accepted the final statement of the June 30 Geneva agreement for a transition "toward a more democratic regime" and then went the next step, naming a representative to negotiate the transition with the opposition. In essence, that meant that "he accepted to leave, but leave in a civilized way," the ambassador said.

Syrian TV quickly said the interview had been taken out of context.

Russian Embassy spokesman Sergei Parinov said the ambassador's statement was "incorrectly interpreted" by international media. Parinov told The Associated Press the ambassador just "restated" Russia's interpretation of Assad's response to the Geneva agreement.

Parinov said the ambassador's statement was not referring to any new information coming from the Assad regime on Friday.

The remarks by the ambassador appeared to be adding a new layer of interpretation to the Geneva agreement, which was based on a U.N.-brokered peace plan that Syria's president was party to. In fact, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov underlined at the time that the plan does not require Assad's ouster, saying there is "no attempt in the document to impose on the Syrian people any type of transitional process."

Choosing The Right Time To Embark On Home Renovations | Home ...

Many people have thought about renovating their home at one time or another. People fix up their home for different reasons; some want to make a simple upgrade, while others want to change the entire look. As a homeowner, there are things that can be done to make your home more unique. The following article is a great way to learn how to improve your home without breaking the bank.

When you look at any documentation at all from a contractor, focus on the type of paper it?s printed on. It might seem trivial, but you can tell a lot this way. The letterhead is something that you will want to look out for, as lack of professionalism could lead into poor work or a scam. This is just one clue. You should also conduct more extensive research into the trustworthiness of any company you are considering.

Look for paints that are free of VOCs when it?s time to repaint your house. They don?t have harmful chemicals and are environmentally friendly. These paints are a little more expensive than other products, but you will be satisfied with them.

Improvement Projects

When it comes to home improvement projects, you should begin by deciding which room you wish to begin in. There?s no reason you have to tear up every room in your home simultaneously; it can be easier and more affordable to go room-by-room. Plan remodeling projects ahead of time and be on the lookout for sales. Planning your home improvement projects in advance can help you to save more money in the long run.

Mounting a television on the wall can free up valuable floor or surface space, which can make a huge difference in a small room. This small improvement can take less than an hour if the instructions are followed correctly.

Table Lamps

You can gain some extra space on end tables and nightstands by switching out your table lamps for floor lamps. Floor lamps rest on the floor, so they have more placement options. By contrast, table lamps eat up lots of space on the table surface. Pick lamps with unique designs that you will enjoy.

If you are looking for an improvement that returns a lot financially, change out an older entry door for a new steel door. According to a recent study, homeowners who invested in a steel entry door, recouped nearly 129% of the project?s cost when their house was sold. Steel doors are energy efficient and can make your home more desirable.

Place several nail holes along the rim of the paint cans! The rim tends to fill up with paint, which will leak over the can and onto the floor when the lid is replaced. By making holes around the top of your paint can you can avoid this issue.

Have you considered adding a fresh coat of paint to your garage door? This can be a quick way to update the look of your house. A new coat of paint will change the look of your home. Instead of putting in garage door in a regular color, try spicing things up.

Don?t sign a home improvement contract unless you read it. Legal terms can be confusing, but it?s important that you read through it thoroughly so that you know what you can and cannot expect. If you do not, the contractor could take advantage of you. Even if the contractor is your best friend, scrutinize every line of the contract!

If you discuss routes you will take in your home in case of an emergency, it can help the safety of your family when in the house. When there is a tragic accident or something beyond your control, people can tend to panic. Preparing escape routes in advance gives your family something to focus on when confronted with fire or other dangers. Make the meeting, discuss the necessities and stay prepared for the unexpected.

To spruce up the outside of your home, try painting it. Paint protects your home from the elements and affects how it will be perceived by people driving by the property. To make this the best it can be, really choose your color scheme wisely.

Before you purchase new hardwood floors, have a professional investigate your current floors. You may already have one under old carpet! You could end up with the most beautiful of floors for a lot less than you envisioned.

As this article stated, home improvement projects have always been popular with people who have the desire to increase the equity in their home. In even the newest home, there is always an opportunity for improvement. Exploring the ideas from this article can help you to choose a project that works well with your resources and skill level

Americans on no-fly list allowed to learn to fly

(AP) ? U.S. citizens who are on the government's list of people banned from flying because they're considered terror threats are not prevented from learning how to fly in schools around the country, according to government regulation.

Such a person may have to drive across the country to learn how to fly a plane because he or she would likely be stopped from boarding a commercial airliner. But the security checks put in place after the 9/11 attacks will not keep the person from receiving pilot training.

The security loophole was raised during a hearing Wednesday to examine the Homeland Security Department's programs to screen foreigners who want to attend flight schools in the U.S. Some of the 9/11 hijackers were able to learn to fly in the U.S. while living in the country illegally. The government put in several more layers of security after the attacks, and foreigners now receive criminal background checks and are screened against terror watch lists before they are allowed to begin training. U.S. citizens, however, are not subject to the same scrutiny.

"I was stunned. That just caught me completely off guard and I'm pretty angry about it," Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., said after the hearing. "Everybody should be concerned."

The government has other screening requirements for someone to receive a pilot's license or other certificate to fly a plane which include criminal background checks and screening against terror watch lists. But Rogers said if the government doesn't want someone on an airplane because he or she is a terror threat, there's no reason why that person should be allowed to learn how to fly.

Kerwin Wilson, the Transportation Security Administration official who oversees the flight school screening program, said he did not know whether an American on the no-fly list has actually undergone flight training in the past 10 years.

As it is, the TSA's program to screen foreigners has its own security loopholes, according to the Government Accountability Office, a congressional watchdog agency.

The TSA screening program does not automatically determine whether a prospective flight student is in the U.S. legally, said Stephen Lord, who heads GAO's homeland security and justice programs. In 2010, law enforcement investigated a flight school in the Boston area and found that eight people at the school approved for flight training by TSA were in the country illegally, and 17 more had stayed in the country longer than they were allowed, Lord told lawmakers. The owner of the flight school was in the country illegally as well.

The TSA and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have agreed to share more information with each other, officials from those agencies said.

The name game: What Apple could call the 7-inch iPad

The name game: What Apple could call the 7-inch iPad

If and when Apple releases a 7.x-inch iPad, what will they call it? What will appear on the keynote slide high above Phil Schiller at the introduction event? What will appear on Apple.com and, more importantly for shoppers, on Apple's online listings and retail store tables?

Internally, for now, Apple might still be calling it "the 7-inch iPad" and be leaving the big branding decisions for closer to launch time. Or maybe they've already decided to call it an iPad mini or something else. Either way, whatever name they choose will influence how the public understand the new device and its place in Apple's lineup, and that's an interesting topic to explore.

We've already covered why Apple would release a 7-inch iPad, how Apple could implement the iPad mini interface, and how Apple could handle the iPad mini display -- Retina or not.

Now let's take a look at what that smaller iPad could be called.

iOS device-style branding

Originally there was the iPhone. As Apple expanded the iOS family of products, they added new brands to round out the line -- iPhone, iPod touch, iPad.

Individual SKUs are further categorized by color and storage size, and other factors -- White iPhone 4S 16GB, black iPad 64GB Wi-Fi + 3G

Apple could do something similar with the 7-inch iPad -- give it an entirely new brand name. iBook has already been taken by the eReader software and service, but Apple could come up with something else for the smaller-screen tablet.

Individual SKUs could then be further categorized by color, storage size, and Wi-Fi vs. Wi-Fi + 4G.

It seems unlikely Apple would further complicate the product mix for a device for which size alone is the only major differentiator.

iPod-style branding

Originally there was the iPod. As Apple expanded the iPod family of products, they kept the iPod brand but added sub-brands to the mix -- iPod shuffle, iPod nano (replaced iPod mini), iPod classic, and iPod touch.

Individual SKUs are further categorized by color and storage size -- Red iPod nano 8GB, white iPod touch 64GB,

Apple could do something similar with the iPad -- iPad and iPad mini.

Individual SKUs could be further categorized by color, storage size, and Wi-Fi vs. Wi-Fi + 4G.

This branding is simple, clean, and fits with Apple's past (iPod mini) and current (Mac mini) brands.

(It's also what Palm used for the TouchPad Go, to differentiate the 7-inch webOS tablet from the 9.7 inch model, though arguably "Go" is a step more obscure than "mini" since portability is function of size.)

MacBook Air-style branding

When Apple introduced the third generation, redesigned MacBook Air, they added a smaller model to the product family. What they didn't do was add another new brand, or sub-brand. There was no MacBook mini or MacBook Air nano.

If and when size is an issue -- when shopping, comparing, looking for support, etc., they're simply referred to as 11-inch MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Air. (Not MacBook Air 11 or MacBook Air 13.)

Like iPods, individual SKUs are further categorized by storage size -- 64GB and 128GB for the 11-inch and 128GB and 256GB for the 13-inch. Other MacBook's are classified by processor quantity or speed, etc. (I'm ignoring build-to-order options since those don't yet apply to iOS devices.)

Apple could do something similar with the iPad -- 7.85-inch iPad and 9.7-inch iPad.

Individual SKUs would still be further categorized by color, storage size, and Wi-Fi vs. Wi-Fi + 4G.

This is superficially simpler, as there remains only one iPad brand, but not as obvious, as inch-measures require more thought than abstractions like "mini" and "not" mini.

Since the MacBook Air is already a sub-brand (of MacBook, alongside MacBook Pro), going with measures keeps the brand from extending out absurdly, the way a Microsoft brand might. Since the iPad isn't a sub-brand of anything (there's no public iOS device super-brand sitting on top of it), going with measures isn't necessary here.

Google tablet-style branding

Google released their small tablet as the Nexus 7. Since there aren't any other sizes (yet?), it's impossible to say with certainty how Google will handle growing the product line, if they ever decide to grow it. However, if there's a Nexus 7 it makes sense a larger tablet would be called the Nexus 10 (or whatever the size ends up being.)

However, the Nexus branding in general is terribly opaque -- Nexus One, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus Q,

Most of those are phones, one is a tablet, and one is a sound box. Yet there's no way to tell which is which by the names, which is more recent than any other, or what the brand extensions actually mean. (The Nexus S(amsung) is a phone, but the Nexus Q(ueue) is a music box, yet they're both letters, and the letter that comes earlier in the alphabet was released later, and... sigh.)

Because Apple has used naked numbers to designate generations in the past, like iPad 2 and iPhone 4, they can't use the same system to designate screen size without creating confusion. At least not immediately. (An iPad 7 would make consumers wonder how they missed the iPad 4, 5, and 6.)

Apple almost certainly won't go this route.

Samsung tablet-style branding

Samsung's original tablet was the Galaxy Tab. When they added larger models, they incorporated the actual screen size measures into the brand names -- Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (?!), Galaxy Tab 8.9.

When Samsung added new generations of hardware, they added the generation number in as well -- GalaxyTab 2 10.1, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

While Apple uses screen size measures in stores and on product information pages -- 21.5-inch iMac, 27-inch iMac, they don't use them as part of the public facing brand.

An iPad 7.85 wouldn't make it into an Apple keynote.

Conclusion

Apple's branding is typically as succinct as Occam's Razor. Earlier this year, they took it a step further and rebranded what would have been the iPad 3 as simply the (new) iPad. While we probably won't see Phil Schiller on stage beneath a slide reading "the small iPad", we probably will see him beneath one reading the 7-inch iPad, or the iPad mini.
