Rotting whale carcass in Malibu towed out to sea

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) ? The decaying carcass of a whale that washed onto a California beach was towed out to sea Saturday, five days after it washed ashore and created a stench near the Malibu homes of movie stars and millionaires.

A tugboat hired by a homeowners' association towed the carcass of the huge fin whale about 20 miles from shore, Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Brian Riley said.

The 40-foot-long, 40,000-pound juvenile male washed ashore Monday near Point Dume, attracting onlookers who wandered down the narrow beach to look at the remains ? white bones, rolls of blubber and the tail flukes trailing along the water's edge. Massive estates line the cliffs high above the beach in Malibu.

Jonsie Ross, marine mammal coordinator for the California Wildlife Center, said evidence suggests the whale was hit by a ship.

No government agency took action to remove the dead whale, and it appeared the job would be left to Mother Nature.

The prospect frustrated James Respondek, who worried that the carcass would draw sharks and pose a threat to his young daughter, who swims in the cove, and to his favorite surfing spot down the beach.

"There seems to be no readiness to take responsibility, to take action, just a lot of excuses.'I don't have a boat, I don't have the money, I don't have the resources,' they all told me," he said Friday.

The Fire Department's lifeguards patrol beaches in Malibu, but the homeowners' association did not take their offered to assist with the towing, Riley said.

Fin whales are endangered, and about 2,300 live along the West Coast. They're the second-largest species of whale after blue whales and can grow up to 85 feet, weigh up to 80 tons and live to be 90 years old.

Because of an editing error, a Dec. 5 "Politics" misattributed a quote from Paul Ryan??Republicans must steer far clear of that trap??to Marco Rubio.

In a Dec. 4 "Bad Astronomy," Phil Plait implied that autism rates were studied in vaccinated versus completely unvaccinated children, but the major study done was only for children given the MMR vaccine versus those who were not. He also wrote that the MMR vaccine contained thimerosal, when it did not. Neither correction affects the overall argument of the article.

In a Dec. 4 "Explainer," Brian Palmer identified King George VI as the brother of George V. George VI was the son of George V.

In the Dec. 3 ?Frame Game,? William Saletan stated that Israeli construction in West Bank sector E1 would "make a contiguous Palestinian state impossible." That statement was based on the linked New York Times article, which described E1 construction as "dividing the West Bank in two" and "making the contiguous Palestinian state endorsed by the United Nations last week virtually impossible." This is incorrect. An interactive map from the pro-Palestinian Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem indicates that an Israeli barrier round E1 would close non-barriered Palestinian access to East Jerusalem and would block direct access between Ramallah and Bethlehem, but it would leave a 10-mile-wide eastern strip connecting the northern and southern portions of the West Bank.

In a Dec. 3 "Future Tense," Kim O'Connor wrote that the deluxe edition of The 50 Year Sword was stitched in Nepal. It was stitched with Nepalese binding.

GOP did, in fact, spend big on Todd Akin's behalf

Todd Akin at rally, sign says

Truth!

Here's me, back in August, arguing why Todd Akin shouldn't drop out of the Missouri Senate race at a time when establishment Republicans had vowed to cut him loose:
The NRSC and Karl Rove's Crossroads have promised to quit the state of Akin stays in. But the GOP's hopes for a majority run through Missouri. There's not much of a path without knocking off McCaskill.

In other words, the money will be there. As much outrage and disgust as they're dishing at the moment, they'll quietly open up the checkbook so long as the race remains deadlocked, and Akin promises them one seat closer to the majority.

If I'm Akin, I call their bluff and stay in.

Akin called their bluff, stayed in, and yes, the NRSC quietly spent a nice chunk of change to try and win the race.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee quietly sent $760,000 to the Missouri Republican Party in early November, just as the state GOP was mounting a last-minute TV ad blitz to boost Rep. Todd Akin?s sagging Senate campaign, according to records released Thursday.

The NRSC funds appear to have helped pay for the pro-Akin TV ads as he was struggling to narrow Sen. Claire McCaskill?s lead at the polls. The disclosure is highly significant because the Senate GOP campaign committee promised to abandon Akin after failing to push the conservative congressman out of the race following his August declaration that ?legitimate rape? rarely leads to pregnancies because female bodies often shut down.

The GOP undercut Akin for months and then did what everyone knew was inevitable?spend money to try and save what should've been a sure-fire pickup. However, that money was too little, too late.

Perhaps it never would've mattered. Republicans didn't abandon Richard Mourdock in Indiana after his similarly idiotic comments and he still lost (though not as badly) in a similarly solid Red state. But Republicans didn't lack cash. What they lacked was a path to 51 Senate seats as one candidate after another flamed out. Thus, they were never going to get to a majority without Missouri.

But NRSC chair John Cornyn backed himself into a corner and then proved that his word was dirt in a hopeless last-minute gambit to try and rescue a seat they should've won easily. And for what? To piss away a big chunk of your donors' money while proving that yes, once again, you can't trust a word that a Republican says?

Woman thanks NY cop with $1K, but he can't keep it

(AP) ? New York State Police are trying to find the woman who handed an on-duty trooper a holiday card with $1,000 cash inside.

Under New York law, members of the state police can't accept such gifts.

So state police officials are seeking the public's help in finding the woman who gave the money to Trooper Christopher Maniscalco in the Albany suburb of Guilderland on Sunday. They say they want the woman to tell them where she would like the donation to go.

Police say the woman told Maniscalco she had seen him doing a good job and wanted to say Merry Christmas and thank you. Officials say it wasn't until after his shift ended that the trooper opened the card and saw the money.

(AP) ? The slain girlfriend of Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher was a loyal friend who brought joy to others with her smiles and laughter, a relative said Thursday at a memorial service for the woman.

Belcher fatally shot 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins on Saturday at the Kansas City home they shared with their 3-month-old daughter, Zoey. He then drove to the Chiefs practice facility at Arrowhead Stadium, where coach Romeo Crennel, general manager Scott Pioli and defensive assistant Gary Gibbs witnessed Belcher commit suicide.

Perkins was from Texas, and family and friends gathered at a church in Blue Ridge on Thursday to remember her. Her great-uncle Ted Downing said Perkins considered Zoey to be the love of her life.

"She had a deep, deep understanding about the important things in life," Downing told mourners.

He recalled a time in Perkins' childhood when she got upset that a friend of hers didn't get a desired part in a play.

"She always had no shortage of friends ? and I mean good friends," Downing said.

A white casket bedecked with a spray of white lilies and pink roses was the mourners' focal point at Ridgeview Family Fellowship in Blue Ridge, about 40 miles northeast of Dallas.

Steve Sweeney, senior pastor at Ridgeview, offered a prayer for God to bring healing to both her family and Belcher's family. He also prayed for strength for Zoey, who was at the service.

Downing told the about 200 mourners, including Chiefs team chairman Clark Hunt, that Perkins always called him her "aunt" after her brother had decided for some reason to call his wife "uncle." He said that in recent months, Perkins had informed him she'd be calling him "auntie" to reflect the diversity in their multiracial family.

He said Perkins had a knack for making everyone she met "feel like the most important person in the world."

"To put it simply, Kasi loved life," he said.

According to a police report, officers were called to the Kansas City, Mo., home of Belcher, 25, and Perkins about 7:50 a.m. Saturday. Police found Perkins on the floor of the master bathroom.

Belcher then drove about five miles to Arrowhead Stadium. When police arrived, Belcher moved behind a vehicle, out of clear view of officers, according to police. He then knelt down and shot himself once in the head.

According to Perkins' obituary, she was born in nearby McKinney, just north of Dallas, and attended elementary and middle school in the Dallas suburb of Garland. She graduated from Anderson High School in Austin in 2009. She wanted to become a teacher.

Downing said after the service that it hasn't been decided yet who will raise Zoey.

The service included a slideshow of photos of Perkins as she grew up, from a shot of her with a cowboy hat on a horse as a young girl to posing in a graduation gown to photos of her pregnant and then with her daughter.

As the slideshow of photos ended, a note from Perkins' mother was shown in which she writes that she'll promise to make sure Zoey knows "what a beautiful person her mother was."

Downing ended his eulogy by saying, "Goodbye for now, Kasi. We'll see you one day. I love you."

Another service for Perkins will be held in Austin, where Perkins' father lives. Life Celebration Funeral Home said that service will be held Saturday, followed by burial in nearby Pflugerville.

New small molecule inhibitor could be a safe and first-line treatment for metastatic breast cancer

Dec. 7, 2012 ? Previous research has shown that a family of genes, proteins and enzymes called the uPA system (for urokinase plasminogen activator) plays an active role in different facets of cancer's biology, including tumor cell invasion, the spread of metastases, and the growth of a primary tumor.

Mesupron? is a new small molecule inhibitor, taken as a pill, that inhibits the uPA system. The results from a recent phase II clinical study suggest that the drug could be a safe and first-line treatment that extends progression-free survival for metastatic breast cancer patients, when combined with the chemotherapeutic drug Capecitabine. Results will be presented by Lori J. Goldstein, MD, Director of the Breast Evaluation Center at Fox Chase Cancer Center, at the 2012 CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium on December 7, 2012.

The trial was designed based on the results of a Phase I study completed at Fox Chase, led by Dr. Goldstein, showing both the safety of the combination drug and some evidence of the drug's benefit.

The study included 132 patients with metastatic breast cancer from 20 centers in five countries. In the trial, patients who took Mesupron combined with Capecitabine went without the return of disease for a median 8.3 months after the therapy. Patients who only took Capecitabine had a progression-free survival of 7.5 months.

"The combination of oral agents was convenient for and well tolerated by the patients," says Goldstein. "Plans for future studies are ongoing."

The drug was developed by WILEX, a German pharmaceutical company that focuses on the development of small molecule inhibitors and other new targeted cancer drugs designed to give patients treatment options with fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. In the Phase II study, Goldstein and her collaborators also investigated the safety and efficacy of the drug, as well as the objective response rate -- the patient population who had no sign of disease after a specific amount of time.

Nine percent of the patients who received only Capecitabine had a complete objective response after 24 weeks. The objective response rate among the patients taking the combination therapy was nearly twice that, at 17 percent.

The researchers also looked at different subgroups of participants to try to identify which patients might receive the most benefit from a combination therapy involving Mesupron. Among 109 Caucasian patients, the progression free survival was 7.5 months for patients who received Capecitabine alone, and 9.1 months for those who also received Mesupron.

The drug also showed a significant improvement for patients who had previously received treatment -- before their disease became metastatic.

In the subgroup of patients (n=95) who received adjuvant chemotherapy following the primary diagnosis of breast cancer, progression free survival improved from 4.3 months in the Capecitabine alone group to 8.3 months in the Mesupron combination group.

The drug has shown similar results in pancreatic cancer, extending progression free survival and boosting the objective response rate. "The data confirm the results of the pancreatic cancer trial reported in 2012. This proof of concept study shows the Mesupron may be of benefit in breast cancer as well as pancreatic cancer. Because the uPA system has been implicated in a range of solid tumors, the drug could well find application in a variety of indications," says Paul Bevan, PhD, Head of R&D and Member of the Executive Management Board of WILEX.

In addition to Bevan, Goldstein's collaborators include Nadia Harbeck from the University of Cologne in Germany, another coordinating investigator; and Carola Mala, S. Kastner, and S. Selder from WILEX.

Fuel Economy Center Stage at Los Angeles Auto Show 2012 ...

Debut 4 Prii

The Los Angeles Auto Show?s media preview days? included cars and SUVS with record fuel economy. All of the mainstream vehicle introductions ? whether the vehicle was fueled by gasoline, diesel, a gasoline-electric hybrid system (that may or may not plug in) or electricity ? focused on the improved fuel economy of the vehicle being introduced.

There?s a reason ? or two. First, as the automakers are demonstrating, vehicle fuel economy is increasing across the board. Second, customers are buying more fuel-efficient vehicles. Even with declining gas prices, the latest numbers from the University of Michigan UMTRI study show that. ?January through November of 2012 the sales-weighted fuel economy average of purchased vehicles has gone from 23.5 to 24.1 mpg. That?s only a 2.5% increase, but it follows on four years of measured increases. (The first month measured in Oct. 2007 showed a 20.1-mpg average.)

As if to underscore the point, the Environmental Protection Agency released the fuel economy ratings for 2013 cars and in the ?best? category the worst combined fuel economy is 42 mpg for the Prius v mid-sized station wagon.

So back to LA. We saw the introduction of a couple models that may hit the top 20 best sellers for the year, including a plug-in version of the Honda Accord, a redesigned Honda Civic and the Ford Fusion being named Green Car of the Year. But the meat of the show hit models that, while not the best sellers in a lineup, were critical to the ongoing success of a brand. Those included the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Acura RLX, Ford Fiesta and Transit Connect Wagon, Kia Forte, Hyundai Santa Fe, Porsche Cayman, VW Beetle Convertible, Chevy Spark EV, three Fiat 500 variations and an AMG variant of the Mercedes-Benz GL, along with more exotic concept cars from several manufacturers. At least three companies ? Audi, BMW and Mazda ? talked more about diesel engines than new models, while Ford and Mitsubishi, among others, highlighted new technology available in their cars as much as new hardware.

If fuel economy was the frequent refrain, ?class-leading? was the most popular adjective. That goal appears to be a moving target as each refreshed entry in a class seems to be poised to be the new ?leader,? usually by an inconsequential one or two miles per gallon. I say inconsequential because as has been shown in the recent dust-up with Honda and Hyundai-Kia over their fuel economy claims, ?your mileage may vary? has probably never carried more meaning than in current vehicles.

The plug-in vehicles that make up the EPA ?best? received some new contenders, all with promises of sky-high fuel economy numbers, but the reality of the slow market acceptance of these new technologies also sank in. That?s part of a market shift that?s been going on for the past two decades. No longer are there several models selling a half million units per year. The market has become more fragmented and the consumers demands more diverse. On their side, automakers have generally learned the smart way to spin new models off of common platforms/architectures and make them appear and function in truly different ways. So the new RAV4 or Santa Fe may not sell 250,000 units, but it extends the reach and leverages the investment in the platform it?s built upon, which is shared with several car models.

Biggest Buzz of the LA Show

BMW i31. BMW i3 coupe concept. While this is not a production vehicle and not the first time BMW has shown a version of the i3, it was one of most important cars at the show because of its groundbreaking technology. BMW?s extensive use of carbon fiber points the way toward extensive weight reduction with no loss of structural integrity and at a price point much-reduced from previous technologies. Carbon fiber is one of the critical technologies needed for EV success, but it also will play a role in keeping the internal combustion engine around as it lightens up vehicles so they can use smaller engines.

2. Honda Civic. This car, while in the top five sellers in the country, was given a quick redo due to negative reviews when it was introduced last year. Honda upgraded the car?s interior and rushed the changes into production in record time. Even though the car?s sales are strong, Honda responded quickly to concerns about the model and with the changes should help it to continue as a strong contender in the compact class. As fuel economy continues to be an automaker and consumer focus, this size of vehicle becomes a key component to a brand?s success. In the same way the Cruze has led Chevrolet?s renaissance, a well-received Civic is a must-have for Honda to maintain its market position.

Chevy Spark EV3. Fiat 500e and Chevrolet Spark EV. I?ll throw these two together because they represent an important shift in the image of small electric vehicles. They still have relatively short range and have little distinguishing features compared to their internal engine-powered cousins, but these two models were presented as something EVs have not been up to this point?serious performance and cars with an image beyond merely green.? The torque numbers these small cars throw up and the Fiat approach that ?this is an Italian car first and an electric car second? is significant. The sales numbers may not be destined to be too high, but at their lower price points these two could help rehabilitate the EV image for a whole new class of consumers.

Audi's Quartet of New Diesels4.? Audi and Mazda champion diesel. You could add BMW to the periphery of this new wave, along with Chevy and Mercedes. This is not simply dropping in diesel and noting how much more efficient it is than old port-injected gasoline engines. Both Audi and Mazda have state-of-the-art direct injection gasoline engines that offer some of the best fuel economy in their respective classes, but still feel there is a role for high-tech modern diesels. And, as Audi?s President Scot Keogh said at the show, this is the second generation of diesels with more expected to follow. The proliferation of diesels shows yet one more path that the auto industry is taking in its attempt to satisfy its customers desire for not just fuel economy, but functionality, hence the Audi diesel shows up in two SUVs as well as its full-size sedan.

5.? Ford Fusion as Green Car of the Year. For the first time, a model with one technology didn?t take home this trophy, which has been gaining prestige over the years. Previously, it?s been a battle between EVs, plug-ins, CNG, diesel, fuel cells and efficient gasoline cars. This year they gave the award to a Ford that would span several categories, coming in efficient gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. It is a sign of things to come, where the consumer is going to be faced with much more complex choices in the showroom than at any time in the last century.

These five highlights of the LA Auto Show, the first major show of the season, may be sum of the direction of the automotive market. It ties things up nicely to say that new technology, rapid response to market changes, new images for alternative fuel/technology vehicles, ever-developing traditional technology and multi-faceted vehicles offering true consumer choice will be our future. And it is not happening way off in the future?these are all happening in the coming year. In that sense the LA Auto Show was a very timely window into what?s coming very soon.

Real Estate Investors Offer Owner Financing then Sell the Note at a ...

Frustrated with fix and flip exit strategies, many real estate investors wonder if they will do better by offering terms (owner financing) and then immediately sell the note they?ve carried back in a simultaneous note sale. In this partial segment of Transaction Review & Calculator Practice hosted on Owner Financing Club, you can see that this investor would be better off discounting the property to attract a cash buyer, or someone who can qualify for a loan. ?I sound horrible ? too much holiday networking at Robert Hall & Associates AND the year-end FIBI mixer last night ;) , and I?m noisy with the mic, but hopefully this video will be somewhat instructive?
